In a sharp and bold attack, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has strongly criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its central government, calling them a “heavily-loaded virus” that spreads communal tensions and hatred.

This scathing attack, made during her visit to Murshidabad, comes ahead of the highly anticipated Assembly elections next year.

Mamata Banerjee’s comments come at a time when her Trinamool Congress (TMC) is preparing for a fierce political battle against its main opponent, the BJP, which is aiming to make significant inroads in Bengal.

The chief minister’s strong words were delivered at a time when tensions were still high over recent violence in Murshidabad, which saw three people killed in clashes related to the Waqf laws.

Banerjee went on to accuse BJP’s so-called “goons” of preventing her from visiting the affected families in Murshidabad, claiming that the BJP was behind the violence.

The violence had erupted after changes were introduced to the Waqf laws, which led to the deaths and injuries of several people.

She further accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of failing to protect the country’s borders and criticized his leadership on the issue of national security.

Mamata Banerjee stated,

“When you (referring to Mr Modi) are in the (Prime Minister’s) chair, you cannot divide the people on religious lines. Please (instead) take care of India… please take care of the borders,”

The chief minister’s accusations did not stop at the BJP’s role in creating unrest. She also leveled serious allegations of a conspiracy against her government, suggesting that the BJP, along with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), had been involved in spreading false propaganda to damage her image before the upcoming elections.

she added,

“I have unearthed most of the conspiracy… I will expose this before the media. But unfortunately, some media houses played into the hands of the BJP in spreading lies,”

Mamata Banerjee’s remarks were made during her first visit to Murshidabad following the violence. The chief minister reassured her supporters by stating that her government had no intention of implementing the controversial Waqf law.

We do not want riots,” she said, pointing out that although the state government had already declared it would not implement the new Waqf bill, the specifics of how this would be achieved remained unclear.

Her comments were made in the wake of violence that broke out after the Waqf (Amendment) Bill was passed in Parliament earlier this year.

The new law brings changes to the administration of Muslim charitable assets and properties, including making it mandatory for non-Muslims to be included in the Waqf boards.

This legislation has sparked fierce controversy and backlash, with multiple political parties and civil society groups voicing strong opposition to the amendments.

In response, the government has defended the changes, stating that they were necessary for improving the governance of Waqf properties.

The law having presumption of constitutionality passed by Parliament,” the government said in its affidavit, adding that it opposed any “blanket stay” on the law by the court. A bench led by Chief Justice BR Gavai will hear petitions challenging the law next week.

Mamata Banerjee also accused certain “outsiders” of orchestrating the violence in Murshidabad, blaming them for stoking tensions and chaos.

she declared,

“Some outsiders orchestrated it… but we will expose them and their conspiracy,”

As the TMC gets ready for the election battle, Mamata Banerjee’s multi-pronged attack on the BJP signals that the upcoming Assembly elections in Bengal will be a high-stakes affair.

The TMC leader is aiming to regain political ground after suffering losses in the recent state polls and Lok Sabha elections.

The Waqf laws issue, combined with the allegations of BJP’s involvement in spreading unrest, has become a central theme in the ongoing political discourse in Bengal.

The TMC’s strategy to highlight issues of communal tension and governance under the BJP’s leadership is likely to play a significant role in the party’s campaign in the upcoming Assembly elections.

The political drama is expected to intensify as the legal challenges to the Waqf law move forward, with both sides preparing for a tough legal and political showdown. With these developments, all eyes will remain on Bengal as it heads toward what promises to be a fierce and divisive election battle.
