Former SC Judge Rohinton Nariman’s remarks on the Ram Mandir verdict have drawn sharp criticism from Mahant Raju Das, the head priest of Hanuman Garhi temple. He accused Nariman of hypocrisy and questioned his understanding of Hinduism, emphasizing that the Ram Mandir issue is central to India’s identity and unity, not simply a temple-versus-mosque debate.

New Delhi: Former SC Judge Rohinton Nariman’s comments on the Ram Mandir verdict have sparked a strong reaction from Mahant Raju Das, the head priest of Hanuman Garhi temple in Ayodhya. Responding to Nariman’s remarks questioning the Supreme Court’s handling of trials following the Babri Masjid demolition, Mahant Raju Das voiced his displeasure in a scathing statement.
Mahant Raju Das criticized Nariman, saying:
“Former SC Judge Supreme Court Rohinton Nariman, while commenting on Ram Janmabhoomi, said that the way the order came on Ram temple is not right at all. He was the former Chief Justice in the Congress government. I want to ask him whether only Sanatanis are wearing the garb of secularism?”
He further accused the former CJI of remaining silent on critical historical issues.
“The country was divided on the basis of religion, you were silent, quiet, calm. Today, the way the Congress government has confiscated 5 lakh temples, everyday Hindus and Hindutva are attacked, and Sanatan is criticized. Yet, you don’t have a single question?”
The Mahant emphasized that the Ram Mandir issue was not a mere temple-versus-mosque debate but a question of Ram’s birthplace:
“Birthplace can be in one place, not ten places. Ayodhya has thousands of temples and hundreds of mosques. The construction of Lord Ram’s temple represents the identity, unity, and integrity of India. Commenting on this is unfortunate.”
He also questioned the former CJI’s understanding of Hinduism, Sanatan Dharma, and Indian culture. “I don’t know what kind of education your parents gave you that you are not able to differentiate between Hindu and Hindutva, Sanatan and culture,” Mahant Raju Das added.
On January 22, 2024, after a 500-year struggle, Ramlala’s Pran Pratishtha was performed in the newly constructed Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. While the temple’s construction is still ongoing, this event marked a historic moment for devotees across India.
For decades, Ramlala was housed in a temporary tent at his birthplace. The Pran Pratishtha ceremony saw the child form of Lord Ram moved to the sanctum sanctorum of the temple amidst tears of joy and devotion.
