NEW DELHI: Kalpana Das Chandrachud, wife of outgoing Supreme Court Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, shared that her childhood in Kerala was free from boundaries, where discussions of religion and caste were absent. She recalled celebrating various festivals like Eid, Onam, and Christmas with friends from diverse religious backgrounds.
Growing up in Kasaragod district, Kalpana did not distinguish between religions and participated in all celebrations, enjoying vegetarian meals at her Muslim friends’ homes during Eid and inviting them to join in Diwali festivities at her family’s home. This inclusive atmosphere enriched her childhood, she noted, in a special edition of the Supreme Court’s Centre for Planning and Research dedicated to her husband.

Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud shared a personal detail during a farewell ceremony organized by the Supreme Court Bar Association, revealing that Kalpana wore only her wedding ring and no other jewelry. They married in 2008, and both are vegetarians by lifestyle choice.
He recalled that Kalpana only agreed to marry him after ensuring she could wear no other jewelry except for her wedding ring. He described her as his closest friend and a strong support throughout his life.
In 2015, while serving as Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court, the couple adopted two children with special needs, Priyanka and Mahiya. Chief Justice Chandrachud’s first wife, Rashmi, had passed away from cancer, and their children, Abhinav and Chintan, are both lawyers.
