The Koregaon Bhima Inquiry Commission has issued a show-cause notice to former Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray for not responding to requests over key documents. The move follows Prakash Ambedkar’s plea seeking a bailable warrant against him.
The commission investigating the 2018 Koregaon Bhima violence has issued a show-cause notice to former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray for not replying to an earlier request regarding key documents related to the case.
The Koregaon Bhima Inquiry Commission, led by former High Court Chief Justice J. N. Patel and former Chief Secretary Sumit Mullick, has asked Thackeray to explain
“why it should not allow an application filed by Prakash Ambedkar seeking bailable warrant to be issued against him.”
According to the commission, notices were sent to Thackeray on September 12 and October 27, asking for his response to the application, but he did not reply.
The application was filed by Prakash Ambedkar, leader of the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) and a witness in the case. In February 2024, Ambedkar requested the commission to direct Thackeray to produce documents that were allegedly submitted by NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar in 2020.
Ambedkar stated that Pawar, in the documents submitted to Thackeray, had claimed that certain right-wing organisations were responsible for the violence at Koregaon Bhima near Pune city in 2018.
Since Thackeray failed to respond to both notices, Ambedkar, through his advocate Kiran Kadam, filed an application seeking bailable warrant to be issued against Thackeray.
Taking note of this, the commission on Thursday issued a show-cause notice to Thackeray asking
“why the application should not be allowed.”
The commission has scheduled the next hearing for December 2, stating that if
“on that day Thackeray or his legal representative is not present before the panel, then further action permissible in law would be taken.”
The Maharashtra government had formed the Koregaon Bhima Inquiry Commission in February 2018 to investigate the violence that erupted on January 1, 2018, during the bicentennial anniversary of the 1818 Battle of Koregaon Bhima near Pune.
According to the police, violence broke out between different caste groups near the war memorial during the event. One person lost his life, and several others, including 10 police officers, were injured.
The Pune Police alleged that
“provocative speeches at the Elgar Parishad conclave, held on December 31, 2017, in Pune, triggered the violence near Koregaon Bhima.”
The police further claimed that
“the Elgar Parishad conclave organisers had links with Maoists.”
This latest development adds another layer to the long-running investigation, as the commission continues to examine the role of various political figures and organisations in the events that led to the 2018 Koregaon Bhima violence.
