Kiren Rijiju slammed Kapil Sibal as an “average lawyer,” saying, “One MP can’t dictate his personal agenda to Parliament,” after Sibal opposed any impeachment move against Justice Varma without probing Justice Yadav’s communal remarks.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju criticized Kapil Sibal, calling him an “average lawyer,” and asserted that “Parliament cannot be influenced by a single MP’s personal agenda.”

This statement followed Sibal’s remarks urging the opposition not to support any government efforts to impeach Justice Yashwant Varma until an inquiry is initiated regarding Justice Shekhar Yadav’s “communal” comments.

Rijiju stated,

“I got information about Kapil Sibal’s effort to protect somebody and to move against somebody. What I have realised is that Kapil Sibal is a senior person, but he is only driven by his personal agenda. He doesn’t have a concern for anybody. I have requested him to also spend some time in Parliament. He thinks that he can sermonise the MPs and then go back to court.”

The Union minister emphasized that many MPs possess greater understanding and knowledge than Sibal.

He remarked,

“He (Sibal) does not realise that many MPs have gone far beyond him in terms of understanding, intellectuality, in terms of knowledge. The far super citizen, he is a very average lawyer, but he has been put into such a thing… that he is the person who will shed light on everything. He can’t guide the Parliament of India.”

Rijiju further asserted,

“We will not be driven by one lawyer MP’s agenda. We are not here to set an agenda or drive an agenda. We are working purely in the interest of the country.”

He questioned why a single individual should dominate the conversation, stating,

“He has no business guiding Parliament. Parliament is to be guided by all the members combined.”

The minister clarified that he would not take a position on the removal motion concerning any judge, especially with the Parliament session set to begin on July 21.

He reiterated that Parliament is the sole authority for removing Supreme Court or High Court judges, asserting its status as the highest elected platform in the country.

Sibal has actively advocated for the removal of Justice Shekhar Yadav, with a petition supported by 55 Rajya Sabha MPs from various opposition parties, which he claims has been pending since December 2024. He has also accused the government of attempting to shield Justice Yadav.
