BENGALURU: In a solemn ceremony held at the Glass House of Raj Bhavan, Bengaluru, Justice Vibhu Bakhru was officially sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court. The oath of office was administered by the Hon’ble Governor of Karnataka, Shri Thaawarchand Gehlot, marking the formal commencement of Justice Bakhru’s tenure as the head of the state’s judiciary.
The swearing-in ceremony, held on Saturday morning, witnessed the presence of several high-ranking dignitaries and members of the legal fraternity. Among those in attendance were Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, Chairman of the Karnataka Legislative Council Basavaraj Horatti, senior ministers, and fellow judges, including Justice V. Kameswar Rao. Judges of the Karnataka High Court, senior bureaucrats, and distinguished advocates also graced the occasion.
Following the oath, Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru was felicitated by the Governor and extended warm congratulations by the state’s top leadership. The gathering reflected the gravity and ceremonial significance of the event, as the legal and political communities came together to welcome the new head of the Karnataka judiciary.
Justice Vibhu Bakhru, aged 59, brings with him a legacy of legal acumen and a wealth of experience from the Delhi High Court. He began his judicial career as an Additional Judge on April 17, 2013, and was elevated as a Permanent Judge on March 18, 2015. Over the years, he has delivered several significant judgments and has been recognized for his commitment to upholding the principles of justice and the rule of law.
His elevation as Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court came following a vacancy in the position. The Supreme Court Collegium recommended his name to the central government, which was subsequently approved, paving the way for this new chapter in his judicial career.
As Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, Justice Bakhru now holds the vital responsibility of overseeing the administration of justice throughout the state. He will preside over the principal bench in Bengaluru and play a key role in judicial policy, administration, and ensuring efficient court operations in Karnataka.
