Justice V. Mohana said she felt “really overwhelmed and honoured” while attending her first public function after taking oath as a Supreme Court judge. She described the moment as “unimaginable” and a great privilege, recalling her journey from student to the nation’s highest court.
Supreme Court judge Justice V. Mohana said she felt both overwhelmed and honoured to attend an event organised by the Madras Bar Association, describing it as her first function after taking oath as a Supreme Court judge.
Justice Mohana said,
“Really feeling very overwhelmed and honored to be felicitated by the Madras Bar Association in the first function after taking charge of the Office of the Supreme Court judge. It’s a great privilege today that I am standing before you, and in fact, it was unimaginable as a student that I would have ever thought that I would be coming and standing before you and inaugurating an endowment lecture series,”
Justice Mohana received the felicitation from the Madras Bar Association in the presence of the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, S. A. Dharmadikari.

The event marked the inauguration of an endowment lecture series in memory of legal luminaries M. K. Nambyar, V. P. Raman, R. Krishnamurthi, and M. Subramaniam.
Recalling her days at the Madras Bar, she said,
“Actually, Tamil Nadu and especially Coimbatore and Madras have been extremely kind to me in my formative years and subsequently also. From the beginning recently till last month in May, the maximum number of work that I have done is all from Tamil Nadu and I am very proud to say that. My growth development and encouragement, I owe it all to the Coimbatore bar and the Madras Bar Association.”
She also noted that the lecture series would be valuable for the bar, adding that the Madras Bar Association would hopefully continue its developmental initiatives.
Justice Mohana took oath as a judge of the Supreme Court on June 2, when a total of five judges took oath and assumed office.
In related separate notifications, the Ministry of Law and Justice cleared the Centre’s appointments of Senior Advocate Venkita Subramani Mohana, Justice Shree Chandrashekhar (Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court), Justice Sheel Nagu (Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court), Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva (Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court), and Justice Arun Palli (Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court).
Justice Mohana is an alumnus of Coimbatore Law College, Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, having completed the first batch of the five-year law programme (1983–1988) and earned her Bachelor of Laws degree.
She enrolled as an Advocate with the Bar Council, Tamil Nadu, on 11 November 1988, before later transferring to the Bar Council of Delhi.
Before her appointment as a Supreme Court judge, Justice Mohana served as a nominated member of the Gender Sensitization and Internal Complaints Committee (GSICC) of the Supreme Court, a member of the Supreme Court Middle Income Group Legal Aid Committee, and a member of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee.
She also conducted multiple mediations, including commercial mediation through the Mediation Centre and other cases assigned by the Supreme Court, and she served as an arbitrator appointed by the Supreme Court, including in international arbitration matters.
Her journey from studying law in a modest institution in Coimbatore, learning drafting through handwritten pleadings, and building a career through years of relentless courtroom practice to receiving a recommendation for the Supreme Court stands as a powerful example for aspiring lawyers across the country.
For many young advocates, especially women entering litigation, her story represents the possibility of rising through merit, discipline and dedication in one of the country’s most demanding professions.
