In a heartfelt gesture that has won admiration across the legal fraternity, Justice Surya Kant personally visited the Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar on Monday to thank and invite his colleagues and mentors, marking an emotional return to the place where his illustrious legal journey began.
Acknowledging space constraints at Rashtrapati Bhavan, Justice Surya Kant announced that arrangements have been made for live streaming of the oath ceremony at the new Supreme Court Auditorium. He also confirmed that after taking the oath, he will return to meet the visiting members personally.
“I belong to the Bar,”
Justice Surya Kant said, receiving a standing ovation from hundreds of lawyers gathered in the Bar Hall.
“After the oath, I will return to the Supreme Court to personally meet all visiting members,”
Justice Surya Kant said, making it clear that his elevation was as much a moment of pride for the institution as for him.
Bar Association President Sartej Singh Narula shared that Justice Kant had gone a step further by organizing vehicle entry, parking, and breakfast facilities for the advocates attending the ceremony in Delhi. Lawyers have been asked to submit their names and vehicle numbers on a first-come, first-served basis to the Bar Association.

For those unable to travel to Delhi, the Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association will install a large screen in the main Bar Hall to live-stream the historic event. Members will be able to witness the ceremony together, celebrating the elevation of one of their own to the country’s highest judicial office.
This marks the first time in recent memory that a Chief Justice of India (Designate) has personally invited members of the Bar to his oath-taking ceremony.
From the Bar to the Supreme Court Bench
Justice Surya Kant’s ascent represents a story of dedication, humility, and excellence.
- He enrolled as an advocate in 1985, beginning his practice at the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
- At 38, he became the youngest Advocate-General of Haryana.
- Before turning 42, he was elevated as a Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
- Later, he served as Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court.
- In 2019, he was elevated to the Supreme Court of India, where he earned wide respect for his jurisprudence and leadership.
His upcoming elevation as the 52nd Chief Justice of India will be attended by chief justices and judges from 11 nations, underscoring India’s growing judicial prominence on the global stage.
About Justice Surya Kant
Early Life and Education
Born on February 10, 1962, in a middle-class family in Haryana, Justice Surya Kant completed his graduation from Government Post Graduate College, Hisar, in 1981 and earned his LLB degree from Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak, in 1984.
Legal Career
He began his legal career at the District Court in Hisar in 1984, later moving to Chandigarh to practice at the Punjab and Haryana High Court. He specialized in constitutional, service, and civil law, representing universities, corporations, and even the High Court itself.
In July 2000, he was appointed as the Advocate General of Haryana, becoming one of the youngest persons to hold that position. He was designated as a Senior Advocate in March 2001 and was elevated as a Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on January 9, 2004.

- Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court: Appointed on October 5, 2018
- Judge of the Supreme Court of India: Elevated on May 24, 2019
- Chairman, Supreme Court Legal Services Committee: Since November 12, 2024
- Due to retire: February 9, 2027
He has also served as a member of the Governing Body of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) and is associated with the Indian Law Institute, a deemed university under the Supreme Court.
