Justice Manmohan Sworn in as Chief Justice of Delhi High Court

Justice Manmohan, an alumnus of the Campus Law Centre, enrolled with the Bar Council of Delhi in 1987 and was designated a Senior Advocate in 2003. He was appointed as an additional judge of the Delhi High Court in 2008 and became a permanent judge in 2009.

NEW DELHI: Justice Manmohan was sworn on Sunday (29th Sept) as the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. The oath was administered by Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor, Vinai Kumar Saxena, at a ceremony attended by Atishi, the newly appointed Chief Minister of Delhi.

Following his appointment as Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court on Sunday, Justice Manmohan expressed his commitment to ensuring that law and justice work hand in hand.

He emphasized that a key priority is ensuring access to healthy food for people.

“I am very happy to have been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. It is a humbling experience, and the court’s priority has always been to promote ease of living for ordinary citizens. That’s our focus. The goal is to ensure that law and justice coexist. In the past few months, while I served as acting Chief Justice, we worked to improve hospital infrastructure and the drainage system. Additionally, we are focusing on ensuring people have access to healthy food, which remains a top priority,” Justice Manmohan said.


Justice Manmohan, an alumnus of the Campus Law Centre, enrolled with the Bar Council of Delhi in 1987 and was designated a Senior Advocate in 2003. He was appointed as an additional judge of the Delhi High Court in 2008 and became a permanent judge in 2009.

On November 9, 2023, he was named acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court.

On July 11, 2024, the Supreme Court Collegium, consisting of Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud and Justices Sanjiv Khanna and BR Gavai, recommended his elevation to Chief Justice.

The Centre officially announced his appointment on September 21.

Chief Justice Manmohan is scheduled to retire on December 16, 2024.

The event was attended by Chief Minister Atishi, alongside several dignitaries, including the Chief Secretary, Commissioner of Police, and other senior officials from the Delhi government and judiciary.

As a practicing advocate, Justice Manmohan handled several high-profile cases, including the Hyderabad Nizam Jewellery Trust matter and the Claridges Hotel dispute.

Justice Manmohan was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Delhi High Court on March 13, 2008, and became a Permanent Judge on December 17, 2009. He later served as the Acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court from November 9, 2023, before being promoted to Chief Justice in 2024.

Born on December 17, 1962, in Delhi, Justice Manmohan completed his education at Modern School, Barakhamba Road, followed by a B.A. (Hons.) in History from Hindu College, University of Delhi. He then earned his LL.B. from the Campus Law Centre, University of Delhi, in 1987, and the same year, he enrolled as an Advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi.

The son of former Delhi Lieutenant Governor Jagmohan, he enrolled with the Bar Council of Delhi in 1987 and also served as a senior panel advocate for the Government of India in both the Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court.

His practice primarily focused on Civil, Criminal, Constitutional, Taxation, Arbitration, Trademark, and Service litigation in the Supreme Court of India and the Delhi High Court.

Justice Manmohan also served as a Senior Panel Advocate for the Government of India in both the Supreme Court and the Delhi High Court. On January 18, 2003, he was designated as a Senior Advocate by the Delhi High Court.

Beyond his legal career, Justice Manmohan actively participated in seminars and conferences of national and international significance.
