Today, On 23rd September, Justice Abhay S Oka emphasized that the historic Bombay High Court building should remain with the judiciary even after the court shifts to its new complex. He made these remarks during the ground-breaking ceremony of the new Bombay High Court complex at an event held at Taj Lands End. Justice Oka highlighted the importance of preserving the old building due to its heritage and judicial significance.

Supreme Court judge Justice Abhay S Oka, speaking on Monday, remarked on the 20-year delay in initiating work for the new Bombay High Court complex.

He emphasized that the current High Court building must remain a judicial institution.

Justice Oka stated,

“I am extremely privileged to be part of this historic function, but I believe that an occasion to arrange this function should have arisen at least 20 years earlier… I am expressing my strong personal views on this subject in the presence of highest political dignitaries of the state, Even if the High Court is shifted to the newly constructed building, the [existing] building should remain with the judiciary. The building was constructed for [the judiciary], and it must remain with [the judiciary].”

He suggested that once the new complex in Bandra, Mumbai, is complete, the current premises could serve as a museum or a center for mediation and conciliation.

Justice Abhay S Oka delivered his remarks during the ground breaking ceremony for the new Bombay High Court complex at an event held at Taj Lands End. The occasion also attended by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, along with Supreme Court justices BR Gavai, Ujjal Bhuyan, Dipankar Datta, and Prasanna B Varale.

Additionally, Bombay High Court Chief Justice DK Upadhyay, Maharashtra Advocate General Birendra Saraf, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, and Deputy Chief Ministers Ajit Pawar and Devendra Fadnavis were present at the ceremony.

In September 2022, Justice Oka remarked that rather than honoring the then Chief Justice of India, Uday Umesh Lalit, with bouquets and mementos, the Maharashtra government should recognize him by allocating land for the new High Court complex.
