From Parliament to Prison: Rape-Convict Prajwal Revanna Now Working as Clerk in Jail Library

Former Janata Dal (Secular) MP Prajwal Revanna, grandson of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, has recently been assigned clerical duties in the library of Parappana Agrahara Central Prison, following his conviction in a high-profile rape case last month.

According to prison sources, Prajwal Revanna began working in the prison library five days ago, managing book records and performing clerical tasks. Classified under prison regulations as an unskilled labourer, he was offered multiple options for work, including bakery, carpentry, gardening, animal husbandry, or crafts, before being assigned to library duties.

The 34-year-old former MP currently earns approximately ₹520 per day, with wages expected to increase over time in line with prison protocols. Following his conviction, he was transferred from a high-security cell to the convicts’ section and issued the prison uniform number 15528.

Background of the Conviction

Prajwal Revanna’s conviction arose from a brutal crime against a domestic worker at the Revanna family farmhouse. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by B.K. Singh conducted extensive investigations and filed a 1,632-page chargesheet in September 2024, based on testimonies from 113 witnesses.

The charges detailed that Prajwal Revanna raped the victim twice and recorded the assaults on his mobile phone. These videos later became crucial evidence when they leaked during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Forensic analysis by the Forensic Science Laboratory confirmed his presence in the videos, providing irrefutable evidence that led to his life imprisonment by the Special Court for criminal cases against MPs and MLAs.

While one case has concluded with a life sentence, Prajwal Revanna still faces trial in three other cases, including two additional rape cases and one case of sexual harassment.
