NEW DELHI: PETA India has named retired Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud as its 2024 Most Influential Vegan, recognizing his advocacy for veganism, inspired by his daughters Priyanka and Mahi. In a recent video for PETA India, the family shared how their lifestyle aligns with Indian values.

The former CJI emphasized

“Our choices regarding what we eat, wear, how we think, and interact with others should reflect respect for the dignity of all beings, whether human, animal, or bird. For example, Article 51A(g) of our Constitution emphasizes the fundamental duty of every citizen to show compassion for all living creatures.”

Kalpana Das, his wife, highlighted that animals experience emotions like pain, joy, and jealousy, underscoring their capacity for complex emotions. Kalpana has been a steadfast advocate for animal rights.

“Many people overlook that animals experience emotions just like humans—they feel pain, joy, and even jealousy. They also have the ability to strategize.”

Dr. Kiran Ahuja, Manager of Vegan Projects at PETA India, praised the Chandrachud family, particularly daughters Priyanka and Mahi, for being role models. Their compassion is inspiring both children and adults to make ethical choices. Dr. Ahuja noted that their commitment to kindness encourages others to adopt a vegan lifestyle, benefiting animals, health, and the environment.

He said, “While former Chief Justice Chandrachud has been named PETA India’s 2024 Most Influential Vegan, this recognition extends to his entire family, particularly to young role models Priyanka and Mahi, whose acts of kindness inspire both children and adults to make compassionate choices. Their dedication to kindness is a powerful call for others to adopt a vegan lifestyle for the benefit of animals, health, and the plan

Past recipients of PETA India’s Most Influential Vegan Award include humanitarian Brahmarishi Mohanji and Vedanta teacher Acharya Prashant.
