Former J&K CM Farooq Abdullah said NC may approach the Supreme Court if statehood restoration is delayed. He reaffirmed the party’s stand on restoring special status and full powers.

Anantnag (Jammu and Kashmir): On June 21, Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah once again stressed the urgent need to restore Jammu and Kashmir’s full statehood.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, he made it clear that his party may approach the Supreme Court if the Centre continues to delay the process.

Abdullah said,

“It’s been eight months (since the J&K government was formed). I am hopeful that when statehood is restored here, we will also get (administrative) powers… Our stand is that we are waiting (for J&K statehood). But if there are delays, we will have no option but to go to the Supreme Court.”

His remarks come at a time when the National Conference has been persistently demanding the restoration of both statehood and special status for Jammu and Kashmir.

It is important to recall that the Centre abrogated Article 370 in August 2019, stripping Jammu and Kashmir of its special status and dividing the former state into two separate Union Territories — Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.

Farooq Abdullah’s statement followed a meeting of the NC Working Committee at the party’s headquarters in Srinagar, which he chaired.

During this meeting, the party adopted seven resolutions that addressed various political, civil rights, and security-related issues. However, the central focus remained on the demand for restoration of special status and full statehood.

One of the key resolutions passed by the committee stated,

“The Working Committee unanimously reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status. The Committee reiterated that this is central to the aspirations and dignity of the people and must be addressed without further delay. We will continue to fight for its restoration.”

The party further stressed that the Government of India should fulfill the commitment made on the floor of Parliament, as well as those made in public and referenced by the Supreme Court Constitution Bench, regarding restoring full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.

As highlighted in the resolution,

“The Working Committee also urged the Government of India to restore full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir immediately, as promised on the floor of Parliament, repeatedly echoed in the public domain, and also committed by the Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court.”

In addition to regional issues, Farooq Abdullah also commented on the rising tensions in the Middle East, especially between Iran and Israel.

He expressed his deep concern over the deteriorating situation and urged for diplomatic efforts and peace.

“I pray that God gives wisdom to Iran and Israel both. Trump should talk about peace. This conflict can only be solved with peace,”

he said, emphasising the need for calm and mutual understanding in the face of increasing violence.
