e-Courts & VC System Deliver Record Efficiency: Gauhati High Court Sets Landmark with 8,00,970 Cases

GAUHATI: The adoption of video conferencing (VC) under the e-Courts initiative is revolutionizing the judicial process in the Northeast, particularly in the jurisdiction of the Gauhati High Court and its District & Subordinate Courts. As of 30th September 2025, cumulative figures reflect a remarkable increase in cases being efficiently managed via VC, underscoring the system’s growing impact on judicial performance.

The latest data from the Department of Justice, India, highlights VC’s rising role in streamlining court operations across four states under the Gauhati High Court’s jurisdiction:

Nagaland1,3961,1672,563

These figures clearly indicate that Assam leads in VC adoption, handling over 8 lakh cases cumulatively, while Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh also demonstrate significant uptake.

Advantages of Video Conferencing in the Judiciary

The surge in VC usage is not just a statistic; it translates into real-world improvements for the judicial system:

  1. Time Efficiency: Cases that previously required in-person appearances are now being resolved faster.
  2. Accessibility: Lawyers and litigants from remote areas can participate in hearings without traveling long distances.
  3. Cost Reduction: Reduced travel and logistical costs for court staff and participants.
  4. Transparency and Record-Keeping: Digital hearings facilitate better documentation and tracking of cases.

The integration of VC under the e-Courts initiative has enhanced the overall performance and functionality of courts in Northeast India. By enabling simultaneous hearings and quick case management, the judiciary can now handle a significantly higher volume of cases while maintaining efficiency and fairness.

e-Courts

The eCourts Project is a national initiative designed to modernize the Indian judicial system through technology, based on the ICT Policy for the Judiciary formulated in 2005 by the eCommittee of the Supreme Court of India. The eCommittee, created by the Government of India on the recommendation of the Chief Justice of India, guides the adoption of digital solutions and oversees technological upgrades in courts.

Funded and monitored by the Department of Justice, the project aims to make justice delivery faster, more transparent, and accessible by digitizing court processes, improving information access, and enhancing productivity across District and Subordinate Courts.

Phase I was launched in 2007, focused on computerizing court complexes with basic hardware, networking, Case Information Software, websites, and extensive training for judicial staff. By its conclusion in 2015, most courts were digitally operational, and pending case data entry had reached near completion.

Phase II, approved in 2014 and implemented from 2015, expanded infrastructure with additional hardware, cloud technology, upgraded Case Information Software, and integration with video conferencing for hearings and evidence recording. This phase also improved public services through digital copies, online payments, mobile apps, kiosks, and multilingual websites.

A major milestone was the launch of ecourts.gov.in in August 2013, now providing real-time access to case information from more than 2,852 court complexes. The National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG) hosts data for over 7 crore cases and 3.3 crore judgments and serves as a powerful analytics platform to support judicial planning and policy decisions.
