Nitin Gadkari, India’s Union Minister, suggested that while laws should not be broken, they can be interpreted flexibly to benefit the public. He emphasized that regulations should be applied with compassion, ensuring they serve the people’s welfare rather than rigidly following rules that might hinder progress.

Union minister Nitin Gadkari, speaking at the Arun Bongirwar Public Service Excellence Awards (ABPSEA) 2024 in Nagpur on Sunday, stated,

“Don’t break the laws, but bend them to the last breaking point if it is for the good and welfare of the people and not for personal gains.”

The awards, named after the late Maharashtra chief secretary Arun Bongirwar, honour state officers who have implemented bold ideas amid significant challenges and delivered excellence in public service.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari praised the late Arun Bongirwar, describing him as one of the finest chief secretaries, known for making decisions in a timely and transparent manner. He urged Pravin Pardeshi, former additional chief secretary and Bongirwar’s son-in-law, to write a book on Bongirwar’s unique working methods, which could serve as an inspiration for young administrative officers today.

During the Arun Bongirwar Public Service Excellence Awards (ABPSEA) 2024 ceremony, Gadkari presented awards to IAS officer and Satara collector Jitendra Dudi, IPS officer and Mumbai deputy commissioner of police Tejaswi Satpute, and Pune additional collector Sarita Narke, honoring their exceptional contributions.

These awards, established to uphold Bongirwar’s legacy, celebrate public officers who have implemented innovative solutions while overcoming significant challenges in their roles.

Gadkari also emphasized the critical importance of prompt decision-making and maintaining transparency in governance. He highlighted Bongirwar as an ideal role model for young officers to follow, suggesting that a detailed book on his leadership and problem-solving approach could be a valuable guide for future administrators.

The Arun Bongirwar Foundation, which honors his memory, aims to inspire future generations of leaders committed to serving the public. By recognizing outstanding officers like this year’s awardees Dudi, Satpute, and Narke the foundation encourages excellence and innovation in public service, continuing Bongirwar’s mission of improving the lives of the people.
