A legal notice has been sent to the makers of Dhurandhar 2 over scenes showing Ranveer Singh’s Sikh character smoking, calling it religiously insensitive. With release just days away, the controversy raises questions over possible edits, apology, or impact on the film’s rollout.

Just a few days before its big theatrical release, Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge has landed in serious controversy after a legal notice was issued to the filmmakers over the portrayal of Ranveer Singh’s character.

The film is scheduled to release on March 19, with paid premieres planned for March 18. However, objections raised by members of the Sikh community have now created uncertainty around the film’s smooth release.

The controversy is mainly about Ranveer Singh’s character, Jaskirat Singh Rangi, who is shown as a Sikh man in the film. A legal notice has reportedly been sent to the makers of the film, the actor, and concerned authorities. The objection is specifically against scenes and promotional material where the Sikh character is shown smoking.

Members of the Sikh community have strongly objected to this portrayal, stating that it is disrespectful and goes against Sikh religious beliefs. In Sikhism, the use of tobacco is strictly prohibited, making such a depiction highly sensitive and controversial.

Paramjit Singh Sarna, President of Shiromani Akali Dal (Delhi State), also raised concerns through a public statement. He said,

“The poster of the Pralay song from the film Dhurandhar 2 depicts a turbaned Sikh character holding a cigarette. This portrayal is deeply offensive and a serious violation of Sikh religious principles. In Sikh tradition, tobacco is strictly prohibited and regarded as a Bajjar Kurehit, one of the gravest breaches of the Sikh code of conduct.”

He further explained the seriousness of the issue by saying,

“Displaying a Sikh wearing a Dastaar while holding a cigarette is therefore a blatant misrepresentation of Sikh identity and hurts the sentiments of Sikhs worldwide.”

He added,

“The Sikh turban is a sacred article of faith. Its use in this context is completely irrelevant to the narrative of the film and appears to trivialise and misrepresent Sikh beliefs before a global audience. Such imagery directly attacks Sikh sentiments and projects a distorted understanding of the Sikh faith. We urge the concerned authorities to take immediate cognizance of this matter, investigate the portrayal, and direct the makers to remove or correct this offensive poster.”

According to reports, the legal notice has been filed by a member of the Sikh community and is addressed to the filmmakers, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. The complaint states that the scenes hurt religious sentiments and show the Sikh community in a negative way.

The complainants have made several demands. They have asked for the removal of all scenes showing the Sikh character smoking. They have also demanded changes in promotional materials such as trailers and posters. Along with this, they have sought a public apology from the filmmakers. They have urged authorities to take immediate action before the film releases.

As of now, there is no official confirmation that the release of Dhurandhar 2 will be delayed. The film is already seeing strong advance bookings and has created significant buzz both in India and overseas markets.

However, the controversy has come at a very crucial time. It remains to be seen whether the makers will make last-minute changes or issue any clarification to address the concerns raised.

Issues related to religious representation in films are not new in Bollywood. But in this case, the timing of the controversy has made it more important, especially since Dhurandhar 2 is expected to be one of the biggest releases of the year.

Whether this legal notice becomes a temporary issue or increases public curiosity about the film will become clear in the coming days as the release date approaches.
