NEW DELHI: In a strong move against what they see as injustice, the coordination committee of all district courts’ bar associations in Delhi has announced a complete strike on November 6.

The lawyers have decided to stay away from work across all district courts to protest what they call the “false implication” of an advocate in a murder case.

According to the committee, the protest is aimed at expressing outrage over the actions of the Gurugram Police’s Special Task Force (STF), which recently arrested advocate Vikaram Singh.

Lawyers claim that Singh has been “illegally implicated” in the case simply because he was performing his professional duty by representing a co-accused.

In a communication released after a meeting held on Tuesday, the committee stated that the decision to call for a strike was taken after discussing the “unlawful” actions of the Gurugram STF.

The circular issued by the committee said,

“The coordination committee views this incident as a direct and deliberate attack on the independence of the legal profession and an attempt to intimidate and silence advocates from discharging their professional duties without fear.”

The committee’s leaders — Chairman V. K. Singh and Secretary General Anil Kr Basoya — expressed deep concern over the incident and emphasized that such actions not only harm one individual but also

“undermine both the rule of law and the confidence of the legal community.”

They further alleged that the arrest of advocate Vikaram Singh is “a deliberate attempt to suppress legal freedom,” and that targeting an advocate for defending a co-accused goes against the very principles of justice and fairness.

The committee added that it cannot remain silent when a lawyer is punished for fulfilling his duty towards his client.

Calling for solidarity among lawyers, the committee urged all members of the bar to support the protest on November 6 and stand united in defense of the legal fraternity’s independence.

They have also demanded that the authorities “immediately retract the charges against Singh” and ensure that no advocate is ever harassed for doing their professional duty.

The committee’s statement and the planned strike underline a growing concern within the legal community over what many describe as increasing attempts to interfere with the independent functioning of advocates.

As the protest approaches, all eyes will be on how the Gurugram Police and state authorities respond to the legal community’s demands.

Background:

The legal community in Delhi has united in following the arrest of Advocate Vikram Singh by the Special Task Force (STF) of Gurugram Police.

The Delhi High Court Bar Association (DHCBA) and the Coordination Committee of All District Court Bar Associations of Delhi have strongly condemned what they describe as an “illegal and arbitrary action” against a practicing advocate who was only performing his professional duty.

In a resolution dated November 4, 2025, the Executive Committee of the DHCBA stated that the arrest of Advocate Vikram Singh, a registered member of the Bar (D/3239/2019), constitutes a \

“gross misuse of power” and an “attack on the independence of the legal profession.”

The resolution reiterated that every advocate must be allowed to discharge their professional duties “without fear or intimidation.”

The Association has demanded the immediate withdrawal of the false case and called for strict accountability against those responsible for the “unlawful act.” The resolution was signed by Vikram Singh Panwar, the Honorary Secretary of the DHCBA.
