'Constitutional Crisis': President Acts On BJP's Demand To Dismiss Delhi Government Over Kejriwal’s Imprisonment & Delay In Administrative Work

NEW DELHI: A political disruption ensued when President Droupadi Murmu forwarded a memorandum from BJP MLAs to the Ministry of Home Affairs, demanding the dismissal of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Delhi.

This move has further escalated tensions between the ruling AAP and the BJP, particularly as the 2024 Delhi Assembly elections loom closer.

The memorandum, submitted by BJP MLAs, cited a “constitutional crisis” caused by the prolonged imprisonment of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and the resulting delays in governance. The BJP requested the dismissal of the AAP government, pointing to administrative paralysis and governance breakdown.

The memorandum also accused the Delhi government of failing to establish the 6th Delhi Finance Commission and of inaction on findings from the Comptroller and Auditor General’s report.

Vijender Gupta, a senior BJP leader, sharply criticised Kejriwal for refusing to step down despite his four-month-long imprisonment over alleged corruption in the Delhi excise policy case. Gupta claimed that Kejriwal’s continued presence as CM was leading to a “paralysis of governance” and that the government had failed over the past 10 years.

“Kejriwal has refused to resign, creating an unprecedented situation that has led to a complete breakdown of governance in Delhi,”

-Gupta said.

He emphasized that the memorandum was not just about recent governance but also about seeking accountability for AAP’s performance over the last decade.

In response, AAP leaders strongly condemned the BJP’s actions. Atishi, an AAP Cabinet Minister, accused the BJP of attempting to oust the Kejriwal government through “backdoor” methods. She dismissed the BJP’s efforts as a desperate move to avoid a certain defeat in the upcoming Assembly elections.

“BJP has already accepted defeat in the upcoming Delhi elections. BJP’s only job is to topple the elected government. BJP is afraid of CM Kejriwal,”

-Atishi declared.

She went on to call the memorandum “BJP’s new conspiracy” and confidently predicted that the saffron party would “get zero seats in the Delhi elections.”

AAP’s Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh echoed these sentiments, challenging the BJP to set an election date.

“If BJP feels that it wants to lose quickly, then it should announce the date of Delhi assembly elections tomorrow itself. We are ready for the elections,”

-Singh said, indicating his party’s readiness to face voters.

The President’s office has forwarded the BJP’s memorandum to the Home Secretary for review, signaling the next step in the matter.

Meanwhile, Kejriwal remains in judicial custody since his arrest on March 21 in connection with the excise policy case, an issue that has intensified the political rivalry between the AAP and BJP in the national capital.
