CJI Bhushan Gavai praised the Indian Constitution for maintaining unity and stability in the country while neighbouring nations face unrest. He inaugurated the new Mandangad court building in Maharashtra, fulfilling a vision of accessible justice for all.
Ratnagiri: Chief Justice of India Bhushan Gavai on Sunday highlighted the strength and unity of India under the Constitution while contrasting it with civil unrest in neighbouring countries.
Speaking at the inauguration of a new court building in Mandangad taluka in Maharashtra’s Ratnagiri district, the CJI expressed his delight that the building has been established near Ambavde, the native village of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, the chief architect of the Indian Constitution and a legendary social reformer.
Justice Gavai said,
“The country has remained united and on the path of development in war and peace. We have seen internal Emergency as well but we have remained strong and united. It is because of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar’s Constitution, which sets us apart from neighbouring countries that are witnessing turmoil,”
He observed that while India has maintained peace and stability, countries like Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and more recently Nepal have faced civil unrest, government changes, and widespread suffering caused by rioting and arson.
Reflecting on his judicial career, CJI Gavai said,
“In the last 22 years as a judge, I have stood for decentralization of justice and ensured several judicial infrastructure projects are completed. What gives me immense satisfaction is the Kolhapur circuit bench (of the Bombay High Court) and this Mandangad court building, which has been completed in two years.”
He described the completion of the Mandangad court building as the realisation of a long-cherished dream and thanked the Maharashtra government for supporting the project and expediting its completion.
The CJI said,
“Even though the doctrine of separation of powers of executive and judiciary is expected to deliver justice to people, judiciary has to get cooperation from the executive in terms of funds to ensure justice reaches one and all. Court buildings have been inaugurated recently in Nashik, Nagpur, Kolhapur, Daryapur. I feel proud about the quality of their construction,”
Highlighting the larger purpose of these judicial infrastructure projects, Justice Gavai added,
“These courts will fulfil Babasaheb Ambedkar’s dream that expeditious justice be delivered to the last citizen.”
The inauguration of the Mandangad court building is part of the CJI’s broader vision of decentralising justice and improving judicial infrastructure across Maharashtra.
This initiative aims to ensure that people in rural and remote areas have better access to timely and efficient justice, fulfilling the vision of the Constitution and the ideals of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar.
