[Constitution Day] Former CJI Chandrachud to Deliver Lecture in Kochi

Former Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud is set to deliver the Constitution Day lecture in Kochi. The event will commemorate the adoption of the Indian Constitution and focus on its significance in modern governance. Chandrachud’s lecture is expected to highlight constitutional values and contemporary challenges. The program will bring together legal experts and scholars to celebrate India’s constitutional heritage.

Former Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud set to deliver the Constitution Day lecture organized by the Kerala High Court Advocates’ Association on December 6 at 4:45 p.m. in the High Court auditorium in Kochi. His talk will focus on “Fraternity under the Constitution: our quest for an inclusive society.”

Additionally, former Supreme Court judge Rohinton Fali Nariman will present the 10th Justice V. R. Krishna Iyer Memorial Law Lecture on December 7 at 4:45 p.m. in the main auditorium of the Kerala High Court, addressing the topic “Economic criterion and sub-classification of scheduled castes: has reservation eclipsed merit altogether?”

A.K. Jayasankaran Nambiar, a judge of the Kerala High Court, will give the commemoration address during a function hosted by the Sarada Krishna Satyagamaya Foundation for Law and Justice.

Nitin Jamdar, Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court, will preside over this event, where merit awards will also be presented.

Constitution Day, also known as Samvidhan Divas, is celebrated in India on November 26 each year. It marks the adoption of the Indian Constitution in 1949, which came into effect on January 26, 1950. The day is observed to honor the architects of the Constitution, especially Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, and to promote awareness about constitutional rights and duties. Various events, lectures, and activities are organized nationwide to emphasize the significance of democratic principles and governance.

Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chandrachud, born on November 11, 1959, in Mumbai, is a distinguished Indian jurist who served as the 50th Chief Justice of India from November 9, 2022, to November 10, 2024. He is the son of Yeshwant Vishnu Chandrachud, the longest-serving Chief Justice of India, and Prabha Chandrachud, a classical musician associated with All India Radio.

Justice Chandrachud’s educational background includes a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Mathematics from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, an LL.B. from the Faculty of Law at Delhi University, and an LL.M. followed by a Doctorate in Juridical Sciences from Harvard Law School. His judicial career encompasses significant tenures as a Judge of the Bombay High Court, Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court, and a Judge of the Supreme Court of India. Known for his progressive judgments, he has contributed to landmark rulings on privacy rights, decriminalization of consensual same-sex relations, and gender equality.

On November 26, 2024, India marked the 75th anniversary of the adoption of its Constitution with a variety of events across the nation. In Kochi, a notable lecture was held, and employees of Cochin Shipyard Limited participated in a ceremony where they took a pledge and read the Preamble to honor this significant day.

St. Albert’s College (Autonomous) in Kochi also commemorated the occasion, reflecting on the Constitution’s lasting importance. These celebrations highlighted the Constitution’s crucial role in establishing and upholding India’s democratic principles and governance.
