New Delhi: Chief Justice of India (CJI) D Y Chandrachud, On Wednesday, emphasized that the Constitution is a “powerful tool” for addressing disparity and establishing institutions designed to protect against inequality.
Speaking at the 13th convocation ceremony and founder’s day of O P Jindal Global University, he highlighted that the Constitution ensures checks and balances within these institutions and outlines their priorities and obligations to the citizens.
The CJI urged students to recognize and address all forms of injustice in the world around them.
He stated,
“The Constitution is a powerful tool to curb such disparity. It creates institutions and structures that are meant to guard against inequality, apparent or invisible,”
He explained,
“In that sense, our Constitution performs a horizontal function by regulating inter-institutional relationships and a vertical function by governing the relationship between the state and its people,”
Justice Chandrachud also urged the students to live their lives not only as representatives of their alma mater but also as voices of reason amidst the prevailing noise.

He said,
“The danger to our societies today is the clutter of noise, and we need the voice of reason among the voices of unbridled passion, Take it from a judge who sits through long, taxing hours of courtroom conversation; a voice of reason and sincerity resonates loud and clear.”
He encouraged the students, saying each one of them has the potential to bring transformative change in their respective fields.
He remarked,
“The first step in recognizing that potential is seeing yourselves as vital stakeholders in the diversity and well-being of our society,”
