DDLJ Policy: Congress Slams Modi Govt After Supreme Court Raps Rahul Gandhi Over Army-China Remarks

NEW DELHI: The Indian National Congress (INC) has responded firmly to a Supreme Court observation criticizing Rahul Gandhi over his remarks on the Indian Army and India-China relations. The apex court questioned the credibility of Gandhi’s 2022 comments made during his Bharat Jodo Yatra, in which he alleged that 2,000 sq km of Indian territory had been occupied by China.

During the hearing, the Supreme Court posed a pointed query to Rahul Gandhi,

“How do you get to know that 2,000 sq km of Indian territory has been occupied by Chinese? Were you there? Do you have any credible material?”

This judicial remark led to renewed public scrutiny of Gandhi’s earlier statements and revived political tensions over India’s China policy, especially post the deadly Galwan Valley clash in 2020.

Post-hearing, Congress hit back hard, accusing the Modi government of misleading the nation and failing to be transparent about the real situation on the Line of Actual Control (LAC). Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh invoked the Prime Minister’s controversial June 19, 2020, statement, where he said,

“Na koi hamari seema mein ghus aaya hai, na hi koi ghusa hua hai.”

Ramesh questioned:

“Why did the Prime Minister give a clean chit to China just four days after our brave soldiers laid down their lives in Galwan?”

Escalating its attack, the Congress accused the Modi government of following a ‘DDLJ’ policy—“Deny, Distract, Lie, and Justify”, in its dealings with China. The opposition party alleged that while Indian territory may have been compromised, the government continues to normalize relations with China without public accountability.

Citing the Chief of Army Staff, General Upendra Dwivedi’s statement about the desire to return to the “status quo of April 2020”, the Congress demanded clarity on whether the 2024 disengagement agreements truly restored territorial integrity.

Ramesh further raised concerns about reports suggesting that around 1,000 sq km of eastern Ladakh, specifically 900 sq km in Depsang, has come under Chinese control. He also questioned the Modi government’s foreign policy decisions in light of China’s alleged support for Pakistan during Operation Sindoor.

The Congress leader cited an alarming claim from July 4, 2025, where Deputy Chief of Army Staff Lt General Rahul R Singh reportedly stated that China provided Pakistan with “live inputs” during military operations and supplied them with J-10C fighters and PL-15 missiles.

In a scathing indictment, Ramesh concluded:

“The fact of the matter is that the Modi government is responsible for the biggest territorial setback India has faced since 1962, and it is pursuing ‘normalisation’ with a hostile China because of its cowardice and misplaced economic priorities.”
