NEW DELHI: Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, along with Justice Sanjiv Khanna and other Supreme Court judges, launched an online mediation training web portal in New Delhi on September 18.

Developed by NALSA in partnership with MCPC, the portal offers an extensive training module exceeding 40 hours, featuring over 50 lectures and more than 10 hours of practical mediation sessions.

This initiative seeks to promote alternative dispute resolution across India, providing high-quality training nationwide. The pilot phase, running from September 23 to October 6, 2024, is initially available to judicial officers and experienced lawyers. Additional information can be found on NALSA’s mediation portal.

As per the press release, the Online Mediation Training Web Portal highlights theoretical insights with practical skills through over 50 lectures covering 20 mediation-related topics, along with more than 10 hours of online and interactive practical sessions.

In response to India’s increasingly litigious environment, where courts are overwhelmed with cases, there is a strong demand for alternative dispute resolution mechanisms. This collaborative initiative by NALSA and MCPC seeks to meet this need by leveraging India’s long-standing tradition of amicable and cooperative dispute resolution.

This program equips individuals with essential skills for effective communication, negotiation, and dispute resolution, enabling them to handle complex situations and reach more amicable outcomes.

A standout feature of the Online Mediation Training Programme is its remote accessibility to high-quality, expert-curated content across India. The curriculum, developed through thorough consultations, integrates insights from both national and international mediation experts. Knowledge and experience that were once confined to in-person sessions will now be accessible to professionals nationwide through this digital platform.

Congratulating Team NALSA for conceptualizing and developing the Online Mediation Training Course with contributions from leading experts in mediation, Chief Justice DY Chandrachud expressed that this program will promote mediation as the primary and preferred method of dispute resolution. By training lawyers, judges, and law students in mediation, the curated content will centralize the dissemination of knowledge on this subject.

Justice Sanjiv Khanna, in his address, shared how the training module was developed over five months through extensive consultations with mediation experts.

As the initiative progresses, NALSA and MCPC are committed to continually enhancing the program based on participant feedback and emerging best practices in mediation. This adaptive approach ensures the training remains cutting-edge, meeting the evolving needs of legal professionals and the justice system.

Santosh Snehi Mann, Member Secretary of NALSA, stated that the pilot phase of the program will initially be open to judicial officers and lawyers with a minimum of 10 years of experience. Applications can be submitted through the Web Portal from September 23 to October 6.

The Mediation and Conciliation Project Committee (MCPC), established by the Supreme Court of India, is responsible for ensuring the effective implementation of mediation and conciliation across the country, in line with the legislative mandate of Section 89 of the Code of Civil Procedure, 1908.

The web portal has been developed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC), India.
