This special event took place in the judges’ lounge Today, marking the beginning of the day’s judicial activities. The occasion was to honor Pragya’s remarkable achievement of overcoming significant obstacles to secure scholarships for pursuing a Master’s in Law at prestigious institutions in the United States, either the University of California or the University of Michigan.
The gathering was a significant one, as all present stood in ovation for Pragya, the daughter of Ajay Kumar Samal, a cook whose life has been intertwined with the daily rhythms of the Supreme Court. Witnessing her father’s dedication within such a revered environment likely fueled Pragya’s aspirations towards higher legal education. Her response to the recognition was a mix of joy and humility; she beamed with a broad smile and expressed her gratitude by folding her hands, as Justice Chandrachud presented her with three books on the Indian Constitution, each bearing the signatures of the apex court’s judges.
Justice Chandrachud, in his address, acknowledged Pragya’s self-driven success and assured her of continued support, stating,
“We know Pragya has managed something on her own, but we will ensure she manages to get whatever is required… We expect that she should come back to serve the country.”
This sentiment was echoed by the other judges, who also wished her well in her future academic and professional pursuits.
In a gesture filled with symbolism and warmth, Chandrachud also presented shawls to Pragya’s parents, Samal and his wife, who were visibly moved by the honor, their faces reflecting pride and gratitude.
Pragya, the 25-year-old lawyer, was visibly touched by the support and recognition from the Chief Justice and the other judges. She expressed her admiration for Justice Chandrachud, citing him as a significant source of inspiration.
“With the live streaming of court hearings, everyone can watch him (Justice Chandrachud) speaking. He encourages young lawyers and his words are like gems. He is my inspiration,”
-she remarked.
This event not only celebrated Pragya’s individual achievements but also highlighted the potential within every individual, regardless of their background. Her journey from witnessing her father’s humble service within the Supreme Court to achieving academic excellence abroad embodies the spirit of perseverance and dreams transcending socio-economic barriers. Pragya’s story is a testament to the idea that with determination and support, even the most daunting mountains of challenges can be scaled.
