NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court of India witnessed changes in 2025, with three Chief Justices of India (CJI) serving in one year. The current CJI, Sanjeev Khanna, is set to retire in May 2025.
Justice BR Gavai is expected to take over as the next CJI, becoming the second Dalit judge to hold this prestigious position. His tenure will end in November 2025.

Salary of the Chief Justice of India
The Chief Justice of India receives a monthly salary of Rs 2.8 lakh. Additionally, the following benefits are provided:
- Furnishing Allowance: Rs 10 lakh (one-time)
- House Rent Allowance (HRA): 24% of the basic salary
- Sumptuary Allowance: Rs 45,000 per month
- Gratuity: Rs 20 lakh (one-time payment)
Salary of Supreme Court Judges
Judges of the Supreme Court earn a monthly salary of Rs 2.5 lakh. They are also entitled to the following benefits:
- Furnishing Allowance: Rs 8 lakh (one-time)
- HRA: 24% of the basic salary
- Sumptuary Allowance: Rs 34,000 per month
- Gratuity: Rs 20 lakh (one-time payment)
- Pension After Retirement: Rs 15 lakh per year, along with Dearness Allowance (DA)

- Sumptuary Allowance: Rs 34,000 per month
- Gratuity: Rs 20 lakh (one-time payment)
- Pension After Retirement: Rs 15 lakh per year, along with DA

Salary of High Court Judges
High Court judges receive a monthly salary of Rs 2.25 lakh and the following benefits:
- Furnishing Allowance: Rs 6 lakh (one-time)

- Sumptuary Allowance: Rs 27,000 per month
- Gratuity: Rs 20 lakh (one-time payment)
- Pension After Retirement: Rs 13.5 lakh per year, along with DA
