CJI Gavai said studying in one’s mother tongue helps students understand concepts more clearly and deeply. He added that it also instils lifelong values, shaping not just intellect but also character and cultural identity.

Chief Justice of India Bhushan Gavai recently visited his alma mater, Chikitsak Samuh Shirodkar School, a Marathi-medium institution in Mumbai, where he reflected on the impact of studying in one’s native language.

He emphasized that learning in one’s mother tongue not only enhances conceptual understanding but also instills lasting values.

During his visit, Justice Gavai toured various parts of the school, including classrooms, the library, and the art section, reconnecting warmly with former classmates and teachers.

CJI Gavai said,

“I was confused whether I should speak in Marathi or English… madam spoke in Marathi but I think there are many who don’t understand,”

Then, switching to Marathi, he added,

“Shall I speak in Marathi? Will everyone understand? Alright, it’s currently going on in Maharashtra…”

Justice Gavai remarked while sharing his childhood reflections,

“I studied in a Marathi-medium school. Studying in one’s mother tongue helps in better conceptual understanding, and also instills strong values that stay with you for life,”

He expressed profound gratitude to the educators who played a pivotal role in his early development.

He stated,

“Whatever position I have reached today, my teachers and this school have played a significant role in it. The education and values I received here gave direction to my life. My journey in public speaking began on this very stage. Through speech competitions and cultural programs, I gained confidence. It is because of those opportunities that I am what I am today,”

Justice Gavai highlighted the significance of mother-tongue education, stating that it promotes a deeper grasp of concepts and builds a solid moral foundation.

The visit concluded with an emotional tribute from current students, which deeply moved the Chief Justice, who felt a strong sense of pride and emotion from their heartfelt gestures.

Justice Gavai explored the classrooms, library, and art section, engaging warmly with former classmates and reminiscing about cherished moments.
