CJI Chandrachud Congratulates Kapil Sibal on Being Elected as SCBA President

NEW DELHI: Today(on 17th May), Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud expressed his warm congratulations to senior advocate Kapil Sibal for his recent election as the president of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA).

“Mr. Sibal, congratulations from us on being elected as the SCBA president. We eagerly anticipate your collaboration and that of the executive committee members.”

-remarked Chief Justice Chandrachud while presiding over a ceremonial bench.

Responding to the CJI’s congratulatory message, Sibal expressed his gratitude and commitment to fostering a cooperative relationship between the bar and the bench.

“It is indeed an honour for me to have the opportunity to serve the bar after a span of 22 years. We assure you of our utmost cooperation from our side, as it is our steadfast commitment to the bench. This collaborative effort is imperative for the progression of our collective agenda.”

The election of Kapil Sibal as the president of the SCBA represents a notable achievement in his illustrious career. Held on Thursday, the elections saw Sibal emerge triumphant amidst a field of esteemed candidates. Among them were senior advocates Adish C Aggarwala, Pradeep Kumar Rai, Priya Hingorani, as well as advocates Tripurari Ray and Neeraj Srivastava.

Sources revealed that Sibal garnered over 1,000 votes in the elections, demonstrating a strong mandate from his peers, while Pradeep Kumar Rai secured over 650 votes. This decisive victory underscores the confidence and trust that the legal fraternity places in Sibal’s leadership abilities.

Sibal has had a distinguished career in both the legal profession and public service, spanning several decades. Having graduated from Harvard Law School, he has held numerous prominent positions, including serving as the Additional Solicitor General of India from 1989 to 1990 and being designated as a senior advocate in 1983. His vast experience and legal proficiency have earned him admiration and respect within the legal community.

Beyond his roles within the legal sector, Sibal has also made substantial contributions to public service. He served as a Union Minister in the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, where he held multiple portfolios and was instrumental in shaping several key policies.

This recent election is not Sibal’s first tenure as SCBA president. Between 1995 and 2002, he served three terms as the president, demonstrating his enduring commitment to the association and its members. His reinstatement to the position after 22 years underscores his steadfast commitment to the legal profession, as well as his colleagues’ enduring trust in his leadership.
