Today (9th April), Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud praised Justice Aniruddha Bose as a distinguished judge and a representative of classical Bengali culture. Chandrachud bid farewell to Bose during a ceremony, acknowledging his significant contributions to the Supreme Court. Bose’s tenure highlighted by his expertise in diverse legal matters and his deep understanding of Indian jurisprudence.

New Delhi: Describing Justice Aniruddha Bose as a “Stellar judge and a classical Bengali Bhadrolok,” Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud bid farewell to his Supreme Court colleague on Tuesday.
Justice Bose, who ascended to the position of a judge in the top court on May 24, 2019, is scheduled to assume the role of director at the National Judicial Academy in Bhopal.
As he extended his best wishes to Bose for his upcoming ventures Chandrachud expressed,
“Bidding farewell to our colleagues on the Bench is always a bittersweet task. The moment serves as an occasion to reflect on their historic tenures and also lament the void they leave behind,”
Speaking at the farewell event organized by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), Chandrachud acknowledged Bose’s significant contributions to the apex court, the Calcutta High Court, and the Jharkhand High Court, which made a lasting impact on the legal landscape.

The CJI highlighted Justice Aniruddha Bose’s qualities, stated,
“Justice Bose embodies the essence of a classical Bengali Bhadrolok, characterized by his attentive listening, intellectual depth without judgmental tendencies, and avid interest in various fields such as literature, history, politics, linguistics, and theological impacts on global cultures.”
Highlighting Justice Bose’s pioneering efforts in modernizing the judiciary and advocating for a technology-friendly legal system, the CJI emphasized his competence in handling intricate commercial and civil disputes alongside significant public law and personal liberty matters expanding on Justice Bose’s achievements, the CJI remarked,
“Prior to his appointment to the Calcutta High Court in 2004, Justice Bose excelled as a remarkable lawyer. His experience at an intellectual property law firm before joining the bench provided him with unique insights into this specialized domain, enriching his perspective as a judge.”
Bose expressed,
“The Supreme Court represents the ‘microcosm of modern India,’ as evidenced by the shared thought processes among judges in arriving at decisions. This commonality of thought among judges from diverse regions is a testament to the similarity among all Indians. There exists an intrinsic Indian thought process,”
He continued and further explained,
“In terms of litigation profiles, I observed that regardless of the state from which a case originated, the challenges, concerns, and grievances were fundamentally similar for all Indians,”
Chandrachud remembered an incident from 2012 when Bose, serving as a sole judge at the Calcutta High Court, permitted a litigant from the United States to participate via video conference in a medical negligence case.

Emphasizing Bose’s impact, Chandrachud mentioned that during his time at the Supreme Court, Bose played a crucial role in significant judgments concerning public concerns, including laws on data privacy, the autonomy of the election commission, animal rights, and affirmative action.
The CJI mentioned,
“Aniruddha, known for his keen interest in legal education, was unanimously chosen to lead the National Judicial Academy in Bhopal as Director. I am confident that he will elevate it to new heights in the coming years.”
In his speech at the farewell event, Justice Bose noted the evolving landscape of law in India, stating,
“The legal profession in India is experiencing significant transformations, particularly with a higher representation of women. We are also at the forefront of developing an independent gender jurisprudence, possibly leading globally in this aspect.”
Bose, born on April 11, 1959, graduated from St. Lawrence High School in Kolkata and obtained his LLB degree from Surendranath Law College. Following his enrollment, Bose commenced his legal practice focusing on constitutional, civil, and intellectual property cases at the Calcutta High Court in 1985.
In January 2004, Bose appointed as a permanent judge of the Calcutta High Court. Subsequently, on August 11, 2018, he elevated to the position of Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court.
