Bengaluru: Today, the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) in Bengaluru celebrating its 32nd Annual Convocation, with Chief Justice DY Chandrachud as the distinguished guest of honour.

As the Chancellor of NLSIU, CJI Chandrachud inaugurated the convocation ceremony and administered the oath to the graduating students.

Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud encouraged young lawyers to begin their professional careers with patience and humility. He emphasized that the constant pressure to act quickly is unsustainable over time and that rushing decisions can have a negative impact on our mental well-being.

CJI Chandrachud stated,

“I want to emphasize the importance of patience. Research indicates that we are increasingly a generation focused on immediate gratification. In a world that is rapidly evolving affected by climate change, social media, and the desire to address social issues, it’s crucial to remember that your profession requires sustained commitment. As you respond to its demands, keep in mind that you are in it for the long term.”

CJI Chandrachud shared an example from Bryan Stevenson, an American civil rights lawyer who wrongfully convicted of murder in Alabama.

CJI Chandrachud advised,

“No matter how intense the sense of urgency, approach life with patience. These times will be demanding, and you may often feel inadequate, insecure, or isolated. Many of us go through this burnout, but remember, you are not alone on this journey,”

CJI embarked,

“Judges can sometimes ask unexpected questions. I recall asking one such question during a review of a petition challenging a death penalty confirmation. I asked the lawyer how much time he would need. The lawyer responded, If you have the patience, I will convince you that this is a case for full acquittal.”

CJI Chandrachud emphasized the importance of building a strong support network to navigate the challenges one encounters, highlighting the value of spending time with family and friends.

Sharing his approach to managing the conflicts that arise in the Supreme Court, he explained that after considering various viewpoints, he steps back to center himself and quiet the surrounding noise.

At that point, he turns inward, guided by timeless values such as liberty, dignity, and individual autonomy. Drawing from personal experience, he underscored that in moments of uncertainty, one’s inner voice serves as a guiding north star, reflecting a unique perspective. He encouraged the audience to never underestimate the strength of their inner voice and the importance of individuality.

In his inaugural address, CJI Chandrachud emphasized the importance of quality legal education in shaping the future of justice and governance in the country. His speech, which inspired the graduating students, touched upon the evolving challenges of law and the role of young lawyers in driving legal reform.

CJI Chandrachud encouraged young lawyers to strive not only for intellectual excellence but also for compassion. He shared,

“As a judge for 24 years, I can tell you why we argue in the first person in our courts it’s not just about representing our clients, but becoming their voice, their advocate.”

He went on to acknowledge the various paths graduates may pursue, whether in traditional legal roles or unconventional careers like research, writing, or even stand-up comedy.

He concluded,

“Whatever you choose to do, do it with passion. Congratulations,”

He also discussed the importance of ethical practice, empathy, and commitment to upholding the rule of law in society.

CJI Chandrachud’s presence as Chief Guest highlighted the strong connection between legal education and the judiciary in India. As Chancellor of NLSIU, he reaffirmed his dedication to nurturing the next generation of legal minds and emphasized the need for continuous innovation in legal education. His call for a more inclusive, accessible, and forward-thinking legal system resonated with both the graduates and the academic community.
