CJI Gavai plants tree in mother’s name under ‘Ek Ped Ma Ke Naam’ campaign; Supreme Court reiterates commitment to sustainable development.
New Delhi: On July 19, In a heartfelt and symbolic gesture to promote environmental protection, Chief Justice of India B R Gavai and several Supreme Court judges participated in Van Mahotsav 2025, a month-long tree plantation campaign.
The event took place on July 19 at the President’s Body Guard Ground in Delhi Ridge under the theme ‘Ek Ped Ma Ke Naam’ — a campaign urging individuals to plant a tree in the name of their mothers.

CJI Gavai planted a sapling in memory of his mother and, during his address, underlined the significance of environmental conservation. Referring to the judiciary’s past interventions, he said,
“Development of the country has to happen, and there is no doubt about it. But the question was, development at what cost? Therefore, the Supreme Court has developed a concept of sustainable development.”
Highlighting the judiciary’s environmental responsibility, he added,
“The present generation holds the forest in trust for the future generation.”
The Chief Justice also recalled the Court’s efforts to reduce pollution in the national capital and noted that,
“the Supreme Court has also played a vital role in curbing the pollution of Delhi and passed various directions in the MC Mehta case.”
The event was graced by the presence of several sitting judges including Justices Surya Kant, Vikram Nath, MM Sundresh, AG Masih, KV Viswanathan, PS Narasimha, Manmohan, and Sanjay Karol.
Their family members joined in the green mission. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta and other top law officers also attended the event.
