Justice Sangam Kumar Sahoo: Centre Appoints New Chief Justice of Patna High Court

The President of India appointed Hon’ble Justice Sangam Kumar Sahoo, a judge of the Orissa High Court, as the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court, effective upon taking charge, following a recommendation from the Supreme Court Collegium.

NEW DELHI: The President of India has appointed Hon’ble Justice Sangam Kumar Sahoo, a Judge of the Orissa High Court, as the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court, exercising power granted by Article 217 clause (1) of the Constitution of India, effective from the date he takes charge of his position.

Earlier, The Supreme Court Collegium recommended appointment of Justice Sangam Kumar Sahoo from the Orissa High Court as the new Chief Justice of the Patna High Court. This recommendation was made during a meeting of the Collegium on December 18.

Led by Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant, the Collegium also proposed the promotion of five senior High Court judges to Chief Justice positions in various High Courts nationwide.

Justice Sahoo was included in this list as part of the effort to address upcoming vacancies in the High Courts.

Justice Sahoo was born on June 5, 1964.

He completed his Matriculation at Nuabazar High School in Cuttack and obtained his 12th grade and B.Sc. degrees from Stewart Science College, Cuttack. Subsequently, he completed Master of Arts in English and Oriya from Utkal University in Bhubaneswar, followed by his LL.B. from The Law College, Cuttack.

He registered as an Advocate on November 26, 1989, with the Orissa State Bar Council in Cuttack. He began his legal practice under the mentorship of his father, the late Sarat Chandra Sahoo, a well-known Criminal Law practitioner, and Dr. Manoranjan Panda, an expert in Service and Constitutional Law.

His areas of expertise include Criminal Law and Service Matters, and he practiced advocacy in various District Courts in Odisha, the High Court, Consumer Forums, SAT, and CAT.

He was elevated to the position of Judge of the Orissa High Court on July 2, 2014.

Justice Sangam Kumar Sahoo is set to assume the role of Chief Justice of the Patna High Court, one of the oldest High Courts in India.

His appointment is anticipated to enhance the operations of the Patna High Court and contribute to improving judicial administration and reducing case backlog.
