New Delhi: The Central Government on Monday appointed advocate Jai Krishna Upadhyay as a judge of the Allahabad High Court, bringing closure to a process that had seen an earlier delay in clearing his name.

Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal shared the information through a post on X (formerly Twitter), confirming that the appointment has now been officially notified by the Centre.

The elevation of Jai Krishna Upadhyay follows the recommendation made by the Supreme Court Collegium at its meeting held on September 1, 2025.

During that meeting, the collegium had recommended a total of 26 advocates for appointment as judges of the Allahabad High Court. Upadhyay was one of the advocates recommended for elevation from the Bar as part of this batch.

However, when the Central Government cleared appointments on September 26, 2025, only 24 out of the 26 recommended names were approved. At that time, Jai Krishna Upadhyay’s name was not included, leading to uncertainty around his elevation despite the collegium’s recommendation.

With the latest decision, the Centre has now cleared his appointment, completing the process that began with the collegium’s approval last year.

The appointment brings relief to the legal fraternity and reinforces the practice of eventually acting on collegium recommendations, even if there is an initial delay.

The Allahabad High Court, one of the oldest and busiest high courts in the country, has been facing a shortage of judges, and the appointment of advocates from the Bar is seen as a key step toward strengthening judicial capacity and reducing pendency of cases.
