Today, On 16th May, Kapil Sibal emerged victorious in the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President elections, securing a significant mandate from the legal community. His win underscores the confidence and support he enjoys among legal professionals for leading the prestigious association. Sibal’s presidency is expected to bring about notable changes and initiatives within the SCBA, shaping its future trajectory.

New Delhi: The most recent update on the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) elections reveals that senior advocate Kapil Sibal elected as the new President of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA).
He secured 1,066 votes, which significantly more than the other candidates. The runner-up Senior Advocate Pradeep Rai, who received 689 votes. The incumbent President, Senior Advocate Dr. Adish C. Aggarwala, came in third with 296 votes. The other contenders Priya Hingorani, Tripurari Ray, and Neeraj Srivastava.
This will be Sibal’s fourth term as the SCBA President. He previously served in this role in 1995-96, 1997-98, and 2001.
His last tenure as SCBA President 23 years ago, in 2001.
The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) elections held today in New Delhi. Approximately 2,400 lawyers cast their votes to elect a new president, vice president, and members of the executive committee.
Among the candidates, Kapil Sibal contesting the bar elections after a gap of two decades.
Another candidate, Rai, previously held the position of SCBA vice president and now making his first attempt to secure the top post.
The Supreme Court recently directed the implementation of a 33% reservation for women on the SCBA executive committee.

The incumbent president, Aggarwala, courted controversy in the past. He had written to the Chief Justice of India (CJI), seeking a suo motu review of the Constitutional Bench‘s verdict on the Electoral Bonds Scheme. Aggarwala argued that disclosing the names of corporate donors would lead to their victimization. He also previously wrote to the CJI, requesting suo motu action against the politically motivated farmers’ agitation.
Kapil Sibal’s legal career is distinguished by his long-standing practice in the Supreme Court of India and his representation of high-profile cases. His departure from the Indian National Congress in 2022 to run as an independent candidate for the Rajya Sabha, supported by the Samajwadi Party, marks a significant shift in his political journey, aligning with his ongoing advocacy for judicial and electoral reforms in India.
