His name appears on an official list of over 80 newly appointed legal officers, including Deputy AGs and Additional AGs, released by the state government this week.
Vikas Barala is the son of Subhash Barala, a senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and current Rajya Sabha MP from Haryana. Subhash Barala also served as the President of the Haryana BJP from 2014 to 2020.
In August 2017, Vikas Barala was accused of stalking and attempting to abduct Varnika Kundu, the daughter of a senior IAS officer, in Chandigarh. The disturbing incident, which took place late at night, sparked widespread outrage.
Following Varnika’s immediate complaint, Barala and his friend were arrested under bailable sections of the Indian Penal Code and Motor Vehicles Act, but were soon released. Public anger intensified when they were re-arrested under more serious charges, including Section 365 (kidnapping with intent to confine) and Section 511 (attempt to commit an offence) of the IPC.

In October 2017, a Chandigarh court formally framed charges of stalking and attempted abduction against Vikas Barala. However, despite the gravity of the charges, the trial has remained inconclusive. He was granted bail in January 2018. After the bail release, he said,
“When you know you are innocent and have not done anything wrong, you do not fear anything. My unflinching faith in God and concern for my family’s honour saw me through the five months I spent in custody.”
After nearly seven years, the case is still pending, with the next hearing reportedly scheduled for August 2, 2025.
