Union Govt Extends Attorney General R Venkataramani’s Tenure by 2 Years

NEW DELHI: The Union government has decided to extend the tenure of Senior Advocate R Venkataramani as the Attorney General for India (AG) for the next two years. This move ensures continuity in the country’s highest legal office, which plays a crucial role in advising the government on constitutional and legal matters.

Venkataramani succeeded KK Venugopal in 2022 as the 16th Attorney General of India. His original three-year tenure was set to conclude on September 30, 2025. With the extension, he will now continue to serve as AG until 2027.

Venkataramani stated that the Central government has extended his tenure for the next two years.

About R Venkataramani

Early Life and Education:

Born on April 13, 1950, in Pondicherry, R Venkataramani pursued law and went on to build a distinguished career in advocacy. He enrolled as a lawyer in July 1977 with the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu. In 1979, he shifted his practice to the Supreme Court of India, where he built his reputation as a versatile and erudite lawyer.

Professional Journey:

In 1997, Venkataramani was designated as a Senior Advocate by the Supreme Court. Over the decades, he has represented the Central government, several State governments, universities, and public sector undertakings before the Supreme Court and various High Courts.

He also contributed significantly to legal reforms by serving as a member of the Law Commission of India in 2010 and 2013. His deep expertise in constitutional, civil, and administrative law has made him one of the most respected figures in the legal fraternity.

Role of the Attorney General

The Attorney General is the highest law officer of the country, appointed under Article 76(1) of the Constitution of India by the President, on the advice of the Central government. The AG’s primary responsibility is to advise the government on legal matters and represent it in the Supreme Court and High Courts.

The Attorney General also plays a key role in shaping the government’s legal strategy on constitutional issues, policy matters, and high-stakes litigation.
