Attorney General R Venkataramani praised Justice A N Grover at the book release of “The Unyielding Judge,” reflecting on his influence in the significant Kesavananda Bharti case and his moral integrity. He emphasized the importance of judges’ internal deliberations in landmark decisions, celebrating Grover’s lasting contribution to India’s constitutional framework and the rule of law.
New Delhi: “A judge’s propensity to not yield to temptation decides how high in the hierarchy of human values the person will rise,” Attorney General R Venkataramani remarked on Saturday during the book release of The Unyielding Judge: The Life and Legacy of Justice A N Grover by Gauri Grover.
Speaking about Justice Grover’s monumental contributions, Venkataramani reflected on his role in the landmark 1973 Kesavananda Bharti case. Justice Grover was part of the 13-judge constitutional bench that upheld the basic structure doctrine, ensuring that the Constitution’s fundamental framework remains inviolable by Parliament.
“The word ‘unyielding judge’ also attracted me. I mean, it’s got several, several meanings and values. We talk about a judge’s fear, and then about not yielding to temptation. I think, then you rise higher in the hierarchy of the values of human beings,”
he said. The Attorney General highlighted the moral fortitude required of judges to protect the Constitution and the nation’s freedoms.
Venkataramani also emphasized the need to remember the inner deliberations of judges when they deliver landmark verdicts.
“When people speak about the notable verdicts of judges, it is also important to remember the thoughts that went through their minds to ensure that the country’s freedom did not diminish,”
he added.
This was a unique occasion for the Attorney General, as he shared,
“This is my first occasion when I am called upon to talk about a judge who is part of India’s constitutional history in a larger canvas.“
Justice (Retd) S K Katriar and senior advocate Salman Khurshid also addressed the gathering, celebrating the enduring legacy of Justice Grover and his unwavering dedication to the rule of law.
The event paid tribute to a pivotal figure in India’s constitutional history and served as a reminder of the values that define an “unyielding” judge.
