However, alongside its benefits, a deeply disturbing trend has emerged on social media platforms, with AI tools being misused to sexualise and digitally undress women using unauthorised images.
Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi has written to the Hon’ble Minister for Electronics and Information Technology seeking urgent attention and intervention over the rising misuse of artificial intelligence tools on social media platforms to sexualise and digitally undress women using unauthorised images.
In her letter, Priyanka Chaturvedi highlights a disturbing trend where AI-powered features, particularly on platforms like X, are being prompted by users to manipulate women’s photographs in sexually explicit ways. These images are often taken without consent, sometimes through fake accounts, and even include photos shared by women themselves on social media.
Calling it an unacceptable and gross misuse of AI, Priyanka Chaturvedi has pointed out that such practices are not only unethical but also potentially criminal. The unauthorised use of women’s images, combined with AI-driven sexualisation, constitutes a serious breach of privacy and dignity.
“It is not just limited to sharing photos through fake accounts but are also targeting women who post their own photos. This is unacceptable and gross misuse of an Al function.”
She has stressed that AI platforms responding to such prompts are effectively enabling digital sexual harassment, thereby failing in their duty to safeguard users—especially women.
As a member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology and Communications, Priyanka Chaturvedi has urged the IT Ministry to take up the issue strongly with big tech companies.
Her demand is clear:
- AI tools must have strict guardrails to prevent sexualised manipulation of real individuals’ images
- Big tech firms must take responsibility for how their AI features are used
- Women’s safety and dignity online must be non-negotiable
She has warned that India cannot allow women’s dignity to be violated publicly and digitally under the garb of creativity and innovation.

Priyanka Chaturvedi has also raised concerns that this pattern is not limited to one platform but is increasingly visible across multiple big tech platforms. The lack of checks and accountability is allowing such openly criminal practices to flourish, further endangering women online.
She has called for this issue to be treated as a national priority, urging regulators to ensure that women are not continuously victimised by emerging technologies.
