KOLKATA: Today (on 3rd June): Two BJP candidates along with several party workers in Kolkata approached the Calcutta High Court, asserting that they were being unfairly targeted with false police complaints to obstruct their participation in the Lok Sabha election vote counting.

Pranat Tudu, BJP’s candidate from Jhargram, and Rekha Patra, their candidate from Basirhat, brought their grievances to Justice Sinha’s vacation bench, seeking relief from the alleged FIRs lodged against them to ensure their unhindered participation in the vote counting process scheduled for Tuesday.

Additionally, some BJP workers from Tamluk, identifying themselves as the party’s counting agents, also approached the court, claiming they were being unfairly targeted with false accusations.

The court stated that it would address all the petitions following the lunch break.

According to reports, the BJP has requested re-elections in 412 polling booths, with 400 in Diamond Harbour constituency and 12 in Mathurapur constituency, both located in South 24 Parganas district.

The party alleges widespread “election malpractices” in these booths, including incidents of false voting, some of which were reportedly captured on CCTV cameras.

The Leader of the Opposition criticized the ruling Trinamool Congress for adopting similar tactics seen previously in states like Bihar and Haryana. The Opposition leader further claimed that, many BJP candidates were targeted, with state police officials allegedly favoring the ruling party by keeping Central Armed Police Force inactive, particularly in Diamond Harbour. The situation led to injuries, including one media person, in clashes with activists from the ruling party.
