ED Attack Case|| TMC Leader Sheikh Shahjahan Remanded to Judicial Custody Until April 9

WEST BENGAL: On Thursday(28th March), Sheikh Shahjahan, a suspended figure within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has been remanded to judicial custody. This happened because of the investigation into the mob attack on ED officials in January.

The Basirhat Sub-Divisional Court decided this. The lawyer for the accused said-

“The Basirhat Sub-Divisional Court ordered jail for Sheikh Shajahan, Mehbur Mulla, and Sukmal Sardar until April 9.”

As per the Calcutta High Court’s order, the Kolkata Police CID must hand over Sheikh Shahjahan to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The court’s decision was followed by a contempt notice to the CID, criticizing the state police for their ‘hide and seek’ approach in handling the case.

“The accused is a political influencer. The investigation should be handed over to the CBI and the custody of the accused by 4:15 pm today,”

– the High Court observed.

In January, ED officials were assaulted during a search at Sheikh Shahjahan’s place in Sandeshkhali. This investigation is linked to a scam in ration distribution involving a former state minister. Additionally, Shahjahan faces charges of sexual assault and land grabbing in the same area.

Sheikh Shahjahan’s apprehension by the West Bengal Police on February 29 came after nearly two months of evading arrest, highlighting the challenges faced by law enforcement in securing his custody. The allegations against Shahjahan and his aides are severe, with multiple women from Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas district accusing them of “land-grab and sexual assault” under coercion. These accusations add a layer of complexity to the case, indicating a pattern of abuse and criminal activity that extends beyond the assault on ED officials.
