CALCUTTA HIGH COURT

KOLKATA: On Wednesday, The Calcutta High Court has granted permission to a six-member independent fact-finding team, led by a former Patna High Court judge, to investigate the ongoing unrest in Sandeshkhali. Scheduled to visit areas such as Majherpara, Natunpara, and Naskarpara, the team aims to uncover the facts behind the recent disturbances. Additionally, the court has allowed the opposition leader, Suvendu Adhikari, to visit the region, albeit with warnings against incendiary rhetoric.

The fact-finding mission, previously detained en route to Sandeshkhali, includes notable members such as Charu Bali Khanna, Bhavna Bajaj, OP Vyas, Rajpal Singh, Aparna Banerjee, and Bandana Biswas. Their arrest by Kolkata Police raised questions about the freedom of movement and investigation, leading to significant media attention.

Deputy Commissioner Saikat Ghosh of the Kolkata Police clarified the situation, stating-

“We requested them not to pass through here but they tried to break the police barricade unlawfully. So, we had to arrest them under preventive sections.”

He further explained-

“If there is information of a ‘breach of peace’, police can arrest them under preventive sections.”

The political landscape in Sandeshkhali has been notably turbulent, with senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari commenting on the local populace’s reaction to the High Court’s decision.

“People in this area are very happy with the Chief Justice’s verdict (letting him visit the island). With the arrival of the CBI, the state police have disappeared. All the wronged and distressed women of Sandeshkhali will get justice. The rapists, looters, mafia and those accused of vote theft will all go to Jail,”
– he remarked

Highlighting the community’s quest for justice and the significant impact of the High Court’s ruling. The situation in Sandeshkhali remains a focal point of national interest as allegations of land-grabbing and sexual assault by TMC affiliates continue to surface.
