In a remarkable turn of events, the Madhya Pradesh High Court granted bail to two Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists, Himanshu Shrotriya, 22, the Gwalior Secretary, and Sukrit Sharma, 24, the Deputy Secretary. They were accused of stealing a High Court judge’s car, which was parked outside the Gwalior railway station. This act was reportedly committed in a desperate bid to transport a critically ill university vice-chancellor to a local hospital.

Justice Sunita Yadav of the Bhopal court presided over the case, granting bail to the two young men. They were charged under the Madhya Pradesh Dakaiti Aur Vyapharan Prabhavit Kshetra Adhiniyam (MPDVPK) Act, a stringent law aimed at the better prevention of dacoity.

The incident occurred in the early hours of December 11, when the accused, along with some unidentified individuals, arrived at the Gwalior Railway Station. They were accompanying the Vice-Chancellor of a private university in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, who urgently needed medical attention. In a frantic effort to get the ailing Vice-Chancellor to the hospital as quickly as possible, and with the ambulance yet to arrive, the accused forcibly took the key from the driver of a government vehicle parked at the station and drove the patient to the hospital. Tragically, despite their efforts, the patient succumbed to cardiac failure.

The case has garnered significant attention, not only for the dramatic nature of the incident but also for the legal and ethical questions it raises. The decision to grant bail by the Madhya Pradesh High Court takes into account the extraordinary circumstances under which the car was taken. It highlights the complex legal and moral dilemmas faced in emergency situations, where the urgency of human life intersects with the boundaries of law.
