Today, on the eve of Republic Day, the President of India approved the Padma Awards 2025, honoring excellence in various fields. Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar received the Padma Vibhushan, while Senior Advocate CS Vaidyanathan was awarded the Padma Shri. This year includes 139 awards: 7 Padma Vibhushan, 19 Padma Bhushan, and 113 Padma Shri.
New Delhi: Today, on the eve of Republic Day, the President of India approved the prestigious Padma Awards 2025, recognizing excellence across various fields. Among the honorees, former Chief Justice of India (CJI) Jagdish Singh Khehar was conferred the Padma Vibhushan, while Senior Advocate CS Vaidyanathan was honored with the Padma Shri.
Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar, who has been honored with the Padma Vibhushan, is celebrated for his contributions to Indian jurisprudence. After completing his LL.B. and LL.M. from Panjab University, Chandigarh, in 1977 and 1979 respectively, he enrolled as an advocate in 1979.
Justice Khehar practiced primarily in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Himachal Pradesh High Court, and the Supreme Court of India. He was designated a Senior Advocate in February 1995.

His judicial journey began with his appointment as a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on February 8, 1999. He later served as:
- Chief Justice of the Uttarakhand High Court (appointed on November 29, 2009)
- Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court (from August 2010)
- Judge of the Supreme Court of India (from September 13, 2011)
Justice Khehar made history when he became the 44th Chief Justice of India on January 4, 2017. He served as CJI until his retirement on August 27, 2017.
Senior Advocate CS Vaidyanathan, another legal luminary, received the Padma Shri for his outstanding contribution to the field of law. Vaidyanathan has represented high-profile cases and is known for his dedication to upholding justice.
This year, the President of India approved 139 Padma awards, which include:
- 7 Padma Vibhushan
- 19 Padma Bhushan
- 113 Padma Shri
The Padma Awards, among India’s highest civilian honors, recognize excellence in fields such as art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, medicine, literature, and more.

These awards are presented annually in three categories:
- Padma Shri (for distinguished service)
- Padma Bhushan (for distinguished service of higher order)
- Padma Vibhushan (for exceptional and distinguished service)
The awards are typically conferred by the President of India at a ceremony in Rashtrapati Bhavan, usually held in March or April.
