Jindal alleges that Banerjee’s statement, “Remember, if Bengal burns, then Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Delhi will also burn,” is provocative and incites unrest, potentially threatening national harmony and public order.

NEW DELHI: A Supreme Court lawyer, Vineet Jindal, today (29th Aug) filed a complaint with the Delhi Police against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, citing her remarks made during a recent Trinamool Chhatra Parishad programme.

Jindal alleges that Banerjee’s statement, “Remember, if Bengal burns, then Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Delhi will also burn,” is provocative and incites unrest, potentially threatening national harmony and public order.

The complaint argues that as Chief Minister, Banerjee holds significant influence, and her words could incite regional hatred and enmity, thereby jeopardizing the country’s integrity and sovereignty.

Jindal contends that her remarks are designed to stir violence and hatred among citizens, amplifying the seriousness of the issue due to her constitutional position.

The complaint further emphasizes that Banerjee’s role gives her control over administrative and law enforcement authorities in West Bengal, raising concerns about a possible misuse of power to incite unrest across multiple regions.

“Considering the inflammatory and provocative nature of her remarks, which aim to create discord and promote hatred and enmity among the people of India, and noting that she specifically mentioned Delhi among the states, I, as a resident of Delhi, respectfully request the filing of an FIR against Mamata Banerjee under Sections 152, 192, 196, and 353 of the BNS. These offenses are serious and cognizable,”

the complainant stated.

This complaint follows Banerjee’s criticism of BJP’s 12-hour ‘Bengal Bandh,’ which she described as an attempt to defame the state. During the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad foundation day programme in Kolkata, she accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of using his party to instigate unrest in Bengal, warning that if Bengal burns, other regions, including Delhi, could face similar turmoil. Her comments have sparked criticism from BJP leaders.

“Some people seem to think this is Bangladesh. I love Bangladesh; they speak our language and share our culture. But don’t forget, Bangladesh is a separate country, and so is India. Modi Babu is using his party to spark unrest here. If Bengal burns, then Assam, the Northeast, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and even Delhi will also burn! We will bring down your government,”

said Mamata Banerjee.
