NEW DELHI: Today (25th July): The Rouse Avenue Court in New Delhi has extended the judicial custody of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal till August 8. This extension comes in the context of the ongoing investigation into the Excise policy case, filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Arvind Kejriwal participated in the hearing via video conferencing, according to a report by news agency. The Rouse Avenue Court examined his custody today. The CBI had arrested Kejriwal in connection with a corruption case related to the former Delhi excise policy.

He faces charges under the Prevention of Corruption Act. On July 12, the Rouse Avenue Court extended his judicial custody in this case. This decision came just hours after the Supreme Court granted interim bail to the Delhi Chief Minister.

Kejriwal has been in judicial custody since March 31 due to a case brought by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has accused Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal of being the “kingpin and key conspirator” in the Delhi excise policy scam. The ED made this claim in a Delhi court on Tuesday, stating that Kejriwal was in “direct touch” with one of the key accused, Vinod Chauhan.

The ED arrested Chauhan from Goa on May 4, accusing him of transferring a cash bribe from the South Group to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) during the Goa assembly elections in 2022. According to the ED, Chauhan was involved in handling a substantial amount of money, with transactions amounting to Rs 25.5 crore. Additionally, Rs 1.06 crore was seized from Chauhan’s office.

Other prominent AAP leaders, including former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and Member of Parliament Sanjay Singh, were also arrested in connection with the case. Singh is currently out on bail, while Sisodia remains in jail.

In May, the Supreme Court granted interim bail to Kejriwal, allowing him to campaign for the Lok Sabha elections. However, Kejriwal returned to jail on June 2 after the interim bail period expired. His subsequent application for interim bail on medical grounds was rejected by the trial court on June 5. The trial court eventually granted him regular bail, prompting the ED to seek redressal from the High Court.
