A Guwahati court restrained Congress leaders Gaurav Gogoi, Bhupesh Baghel, and Jitendra Singh from making defamatory remarks against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who has filed a defamation suit seeking Rs.500 crore in damages.
A court in Guwahati issued an order prohibiting Congress leaders Gaurav Gogoi, Bhupesh Baghel, and Jitendra Singh from making defamatory statements against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who has filed a defamation lawsuit seeking Rs 500 crore.
This injunction remains in effect until the defendants appear in person.
Following the arguments presented by the petitioner’s attorney, Civil Judge of Senior Division No 1, Nayanjyoti Sarma, granted an ‘ad-interim injunction’.

This order restrains Gogoi, Baghel, and Singh, along with a prominent Assamese newspaper, from “making, publishing, circulating or disseminating any further defamatory statements or materials concerning the petitioner till their appearance in court.”
Judge Sarma noted in his ruling that the court believes that failing to issue an ‘ad-interim injunction’ would “defeat the justice and there is every possibility of multiplicity of proceedings.”
The court has scheduled the defendants to appear before it on March 9.
This development represents a significant intensification in the legal dispute between the Chief Minister and senior Congress figures regarding allegations of land ownership, with the court’s interim order instituting immediate restrictions on any further public statements relating to the matter.
