In a recent development, the producers of the film “Adipurush” have approached the Supreme Court, challenging an order from the Allahabad High Court that mandates their personal appearance before the court. The matter was presented to the apex court as one of grave urgency.

The bench, led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, asked the lawyer to bring up the matter the following day. The challenge is in response to an order issued by the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court on June 30.

The order was passed in the context of public interest litigation (PIL) petitions demanding a ban on the film. The court criticized the makers of “Adipurush” for what it termed as the “shameful” and “vulgar” portrayal of certain characters in the film.

In light of these concerns, the court ordered the film’s director, Om Raut, producer Bhushan Kumar, and dialogue writer Manoj Muntashir to appear in person before the court on July 27. They were also asked to provide personal affidavits explaining their bonafides.

Furthermore, the court ordered the formation of an expert committee to reassess whether “Adipurush” is faithful to the “Ramayana,” which seems to be its primary source of inspiration.

This case highlights the ongoing tension between creative freedom and cultural sensitivity in the film industry. The Supreme Court’s decision on this matter will be closely watched, as it could set a precedent for future disputes of a similar nature.
