Justice Amrita Singh has granted permission for the case to proceed, with a scheduled hearing at 2 pm.

KOLKATA: Today (14th June): Opposition leader Subhendu Adhikari approached the Calcutta High Court after alleging that police prevented him and those affected by post-poll violence from meeting the governor at Raj Bhavan.

Justice Amrita Singh has granted permission for the case to proceed, with a scheduled hearing at 2 pm.

On Thursday, opposition leaders attempted to lead a campaign to Raj Bhavan with individuals affected by post-poll violence, aiming to lodge a complaint with the governor. However, they were reportedly obstructed by police and unable to enter the premises, despite claiming prior permission from Governor CV Anand Bose.

Subhendu Adhikari criticized this action, likening it to restrictions not seen even during past states of emergency, and accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of exhibiting authoritarian tendencies.

Subhendu Adhikari further mentioned that the state’s chief secretary and home secretary have been summoned by Raj Bhavan in relation to these developments. Following these events, he filed a petition in the High Court early Friday morning, alleging interference by police despite official clearance to proceed to Raj Bhavan.

The BJP has consistently highlighted issues concerning those affected by post-poll violence, renting accommodations in North Kolkata for displaced individuals. BJP state president Sukant Majumder also expressed concern over alleged actions by miscreants sheltered by the Trinamool Congress, contrasting with the deployment of central forces in the state.

Subhendu Adhikari and others impacted by post-poll violence from various areas were scheduled to meet Governor Bose on Thursday afternoon, but were reportedly halted by police outside Raj Bhavan. The BJP leader asserted that the Kolkata Police, responsible for the area around Raj Bhavan, did not provide a clear reason for their obstruction.
