The Central Government Today (Aug 6) allowed the release of the film Udaipur Files after rejecting all objections. The Delhi High Court earlier asked for a fresh review, but officials upheld the film’s release with cuts.

This decision was taken after the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting carefully reviewed the matter, including all objections raised against the movie.
The government finally rejected the revision petitions filed by those who were opposing the release of the film.
The Ministry said that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) had already certified the film after going through proper legal steps. During this process, the CBFC had ordered 55 cuts in the film. On top of that, the producers of the movie also agreed to make more changes.
The Ministry clarified that the people who filed objections could not give strong enough reasons to justify more action than what has already been done.
“Therefore, in consideration of the foregoing facts and findings, and in pursuance of the directions contained in the Order of the Hon’ble High Court of Delhi dated 01.08.2025, the competent authority in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, acting in its capacity as the Revisional Authority under Section 6 of the Cinematograph Act, 1952, holds that no case is made out for the exercise of powers under sub-section (2) of Section 6 of the Cinematograph Act, 1952. Accordingly, the revision petitions/representations are hereby dismissed,”
-said Under Secretary Santosh Kumar Maurya in the official government order.
This development comes after the Delhi High Court on August 1, 2025, told the Centre to re-examine the film.
This was after Additional Solicitor General Chetan Sharma said in court that the Ministry would withdraw its earlier decision on the movie cuts and take a fresh call by following proper legal procedure.
Earlier, the High Court had questioned whether the Centre even had the legal power to order such cuts under the law. Since the film’s producers had already announced a release date of August 8, the Court had instructed the government to make a proper decision before that.
The petitions against the movie’s release were filed by people including Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind President Maulana Arshad Madani, as well as one of the accused in the Kanhaiya Lal murder case. They claimed that the film paints Muslims in a bad light and could impact the right to a fair trial for the accused.

The film Udaipur Files talks about the murder of tailor Kanhaiya Lal, who was killed by two men in June 2022. His murder took place after he posted a WhatsApp status showing support for BJP leader Nupur Sharma, who had earlier made controversial remarks about Prophet Muhammad.
The movie was earlier scheduled to release on July 11, but the High Court had stayed the release and told the Centre to use its revisional powers under the Cinematograph Act, 1952, to look into the matter again.
Due to this, the film’s makers had approached the Supreme Court to appeal against the High Court’s order. However, the Supreme Court refused to interfere. So, the Centre formed a review panel to examine the movie.
After reviewing, the panel recommended releasing the movie with certain changes. The Central Government told the film producers to make these changes.
But again, this led to a new legal challenge in the High Court. The Court again asked whether the Centre had the legal authority to demand such cuts and sent the matter back for a fresh decision.
Now, after a complete review and following the High Court’s directions, the Government has clearly said that the movie can be released and there is no need for further action.
