The Government of India has transferred Justice Shree Chandrashekhar from the Jharkhand High Court to the Rajasthan High Court, where he served as Acting Chief Justice. Concurrently, Justice BR Sarangi has been appointed as the new Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court, as confirmed by the Ministry of Law and Justice today(on 3rd July).

Ranchi: Today(on 3rd July), The Government of India has officially notified the transfer of Justice Shree Chandrashekhar from the Jharkhand High Court to the Rajasthan High Court. This reshuffle, confirmed by the Ministry of Law and Justice, is a strategic move aimed at enhancing judicial efficiency across the nation.

Justice Chandrashekhar, previously serving as the Acting Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court, is renowned for his profound legal insights and dedication to upholding justice. His transfer to the Rajasthan High Court is viewed as a move to balance the distribution of experienced judges among the high courts of India.

Reflecting on his career, Justice Chandrashekhar completed his LLB in 1993 and was enrolled as an Advocate with the Delhi State Bar Council. He began his practice in Delhi, handling both criminal and civil cases. Throughout his 19-year practice, he conducted approximately 3,500 cases, mostly in the Supreme Court of India.

The Jharkhand High Court’s official website notes-

“There are about 140 reported judgments of the Supreme Court in which he appeared as counsel.”

Justice Chandrashekhar’s judicial career began with his appointment as an Additional Judge of the Jharkhand High Court on January 17, 2013. He became a permanent Judge on June 27, 2014. His tenure at the Jharkhand High Court saw him presiding over numerous high-profile cases and delivering several landmark judgments. He was appointed as the Acting Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court on December 29, 2023.

Meanwhile, the Central Government has notified the appointment of Justice BR Sarangi as the Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court. This appointment comes almost six months after the Supreme Court Collegium proposed Justice Sarangi’s elevation.

Justice Sarangi, currently the senior most Judge of the Orissa High Court, will fill the post of Chief Justice which has been vacant since the retirement of former Chief Justice Sanjaya Kumar Mishra on December 28, 2023. Justice Shree Chandrashekhar had been serving as the Acting Chief Justice since then.

Justice BR Sarangi’s illustrious career began in December 1985 when he started practicing at the Orissa High Court and the Supreme Court of India. His expertise spans various branches of law, including civil, criminal, constitutional, revenue, tax, labor, service, mining, education, electricity, insurance, banking, telephone, and elections.

Recognizing his exemplary performance and high professional ethics, the then Chief Justice of Orissa High Court conferred the Haricharan Mukherjee Memorial Award with a Gold Medal on Justice Sarangi in 2002.

Over his 27-year practice, Justice Sarangi appeared before numerous judicial bodies and served as Arbitrator, Advocate Commission, and Amicus Curiae in many cases. Elevated to the bench on June 20, 2013, as a Permanent Judge of the Orissa High Court, he has disposed of over 1,52,000 cases and delivered nearly 1,500 reported judgments.

Justice Sarangi is now set to retire on July 20, less than a month after his appointment as Chief Justice. His extensive experience and commitment to justice are expected to significantly benefit the Jharkhand High Court during his short tenure.
