In a startling revelation, the Tamil Nadu police have arrested R Venkatesaperuma, an individual who audaciously posed as the personal secretary of Justice N. Anand Venkatesh of the Madras High Court. The imposter had deceitfully reached out to a private college, attempting to secure a seat for someone he claimed was known to him.
The ruse was uncovered when a senior advocate, acting on the college’s behalf, contacted Justice Venkatesh’s chambers. The advocate informed the staff,
“The college had received calls from someone identifying as Justice Venkatesh’s secretary.”
Not only did the advocate bring this to the judge’s attention, but he also shared the phone number from which the college had received the dubious call.
In a bid to ascertain the truth, Justice Venkatesh’s official personal secretary, K Pushpalatha, took the initiative to call the provided number. The individual who answered brazenly introduced himself, stating he was indeed
“Justice Venkatesh’s secretary.”
Recognizing the gravity of the situation and the potential harm such impersonation could cause, Pushpalatha promptly registered a police complaint. This decisive action led to the swift arrest of the imposter.
The police, recognizing the seriousness of the offense, have lodged a case at the High Court Police Station. R Venkatesaperuma now faces charges of cheating and impersonation under Sections 417, 419, and 511 of the Indian Penal Code.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the lengths to which individuals might go to misuse the names of esteemed institutions and personalities. It underscores the importance of due diligence and the need for institutions to verify claims before taking any action.
